Be it known that I, SAMUEL I-I. Tirer, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elkins Fark, Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Preheater-Inlet, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices known as preheaters, providing for the heating of air prior to its admission to the lire above the grate.
The purpose of my invention is to provide an intake or inlet opening for a stove lid with protection against complete closure, While permitting the size of the opening to be a-dusted with great nicety.
A further purpose of my invention is to provide closing means for an air inlet through a stove lid, preferably by a cam slide closure; to protect this means from interference vby utensils placed upon the stove; and to protect at the same time against closure of the opening by these utensils.
Other purposes of my invention will appear from the specification and claims herein. v
I have preferred to illustrate my invention by one form thereof which has proved most practical and efhcient and which at the same time Well illustrates the theory of my invention.

My invention is applied to stove lids which are intended, preferably, for'location over the oven and at a distance from the fireV grate, close to the smoke flue.
The structure described and claimed in this present application is capable of cooperation with various forms of lid 'structure providing pre-heating convolutions or passages, and need not be placed at the cen- 'ter of the plate.
I have illustrated a form of stove plate having connecting pre-heating passages upon the under side, beginning with the passage G and extending outwardly, according to any preferred law, so that the air shall finally be discharged from some outer passage such as that at 7. The passages are illustrated as bounded upon their upper surfaces by the lid top S, on their lower surfaces by the lower part of the plate 9, here shown as slightly conical, and upon their sides by the several walls 10. The bottom portion 9 and walls 10 are preferably formed separate from the top plate 8 and united thereto as by any suitable. bolts 11 and nut 12. The top plate is shown as provided with an annular ring 13 which affords a seat within whichthe outerwalls 10 are placed.
The construction thus far illustrated is not intended to be claimed in this application, but forms part of another application by me, copendingherewith, for pre-heater plate, filed February 9, 1912, Serial No. 676,643. It sulices to illustrate one combination of pre-heating passages with which the invention claimed herein is capable of coperating.
l/Vhatever the form of the pre-heating passages, I purpose forming an aperture, as at 11, at such position in the plate as is required by the intended inlet point of the cool air and attach a movable plate 15 in proximity to it, so that the cam opening, as 16, in the said movable plate is capable of cooperating with the opening 14.
I prefer to make this plate 15 rotatable and, correspondingly, to arrange the cam opening in the general form of an arc about the pivot 17 by which the plate is retained and about which it turns, though I recognize that other characters of movement than rotation and other corresponding shapes of cam groove might bensed to accomplish the same result. y
Since the plate to which'my invention'is preferably applied is not normally situated above the lire, it need not often be disturbed and docs not require the usual lifter connection. ln order that it may be removed,
however, I extend the rivet forming the pivot 17 to form a neck 18, surmounted by a head 19 which may be engaged by a fork or a special implement as desired.
From the illustrations in Figs. 1, 3 and 5, showing dierent positions of the plate 15 and of the cam groove, it will be evident that rotation of this plate makes a great difference in the extent of opening provided,
and I have preferred to place an indicator 2O upon the preferably rotatable plate l5, and such Wording as IIot, Night, Offj on the plate 8, as shall bring suitable parts of the cam groove in line with the opening 14 in the plate 8 when considerable heat is required, when intended to be arranged for the night, and when reduced to the least amount of heat desired, respectively corresponding With the direction of the indicator 2O pointing to one or another of these Wordings.
The wedge-like progressive closing of the opening by the cam Wall of the lgroove forms a very effective means of gradually increasing or lesseningthe size of opening provided.
It is very desirable that the air shall not be Wholly shut olf at any time from the passage 14, and I have provided two means for preventing such a happening. I form any suitable raised portions 21 about the plate 15, Whatever its path of movement, circular or otherwise, in such position as to prevent any utensil from catching against the indicator 20 or against the surface of the movable plate 15, thus preventing accidental dis placement of the pla-te; and I provide openings 22 between the raised portions to permit passage of air therethrough Without interference by any utensil which may be placed upon the stove and rest upon the curved portions 21.
I also provide against excessive movement, here shown as rotation, of the plate 15, such as would cause the opening 14; to be entirely closed, by a pin or stud 23, secured to or placed in the preferably recessed portion 24C of the plate 8, in combination with the groove 25 in the plate 15. rIhe pin is so placed as to engage with the ends 26, 27 of said groove when the intended limit of rotation is reached.
The portions 28 and 29 of the plate are illustrated as depressed merely for the purpose of permitting lettering thereon without projection above the level of the plate.
Complete closing of the opening 14E would be dangerous under the circumstances of usual pre-heater use, because the drafts of the stove are completely closed and the opening to the chimney almost entirely closed during part of the time when the plate is in use. With complete closure of the opening Copies of this patent may be obtained for lll and the substantial closure of all draft with which it is desirable and at times possible to use these plates, excessive gas would be given off into the room. This justifies considerable effort to prevent the closure of the opening 14.
It. Will be evident that the shape of the movable plate and of its opening, as Well as the character of movement given to it may be varied While much of the benefit of my invention is obtained Y wIaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I- 1. In a device of the character stated, a pre-heater having connecting passages and an inlet opening to one of said passages and a movable plate adapted to lie over the opening and having an opening in cam form with respect to the path of movement of the plate, the extent of the opening in a direction perpendicular to the direction of plate movement increasing from one end of the opening toward the other throughout substantially the entire length of the opening measured along this path of movement, and covering the inlet opening to variant degrees during the movement.
2. In a device of the character stated, a stove lid, pre-heater chambers and an aperture thereinto, and a movable plate pivoted to the stove lid in proximity to said aperture and having a portion of greater extent than the opening in the direction of movement and which is eccentric to said pivot and capable of restricting said aperture progressively With/movement in one direction, in combination with a stop limiting the rotation of the plate to prevent complete clo sure of the aperture.
3. In a device of the character stated, a pre-heater having connecting passages and an inlet opening thereto, in combination with a movable plate having an edge of the plate of greater length than the opening in the direction of movement extending progressively farther over the opening in a di rection transverse to the line of movement of the plate, tending to close the opening by a Wedge-like operation.
