To all whom may mean Be it known that I, HARRY A. SHUNK, a citizen 9f the United. States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Gas-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that form of stove or, range which is provided with two burners, the one located below, and used for heating the oven, and the other located above or in the upper part of the oven and used for broiling and similar operations and particularly to that class of such stoves in which the burners lie at right angles one to the other, the one being supplied with from a pipe entering at the front of the stove and the other from a pipe entering at the side of the stove.
A defect in the operation of stoves having two burners has been due to the fact that, while it is not intended that the two burners shall be used simultaneously, it, frequently happens that, through inadvertence of the operator, after the gas has been turned on and ignited at one burner, "it is turned on at the other with a resulting accumulation and sudden ignition of a considerable quantity of gas with a consequent unpleasant and even dangerous explosive effect. This defect has been remedied in the case of moves having burners supplied by gas pipes entering on the same face of the stove and consequentlyhaving valves located directly one above the other and valve stems running in the same direction, by means or? a vertically movablemember having parallel projections and corresponding pro ections on the valve stems by means of which, when one valve is opened the other is locked against opening. Such a construction is not applicable, however, to the case where the gas entrances to the burners are located on difierent faces of the stove, since it would involve a long runv or pipe from one or the other of the gas valves to the corresponding burher with a consequent escape of gas upon the closing of the valve after the-burner has been'in operation. v
The object of my improvement is to rem-- edy this difficulty and to this endmy invention consists in providing in combination with controlling valves located in close proximity to'the two burners of valve t s which extend along the two faces stove to a common corner thereof and tically movable member located at such common corner and having upper and lower lugs projecting therefrom at right ang s one to the other and adapted to contact similarly positioned projections on the two valve stems.

The valves, C, C, are so arranged, in any well known manner, that they can be opened to turn the valve stem, D, to open the valve,
C, so long as the lower burner is in operation. In the same manner when it is desired in the first instance to use the upper burner and, for this purpose, the valve, 0, is opened the stop, G is turned down against the shoulder, F, thus holding the shoulder, F, down against the stop or cam,
G, so that the valve-stem, D, cannot be turned and thus the valve, C, which controls the pipe leading to the lower burner cannot be opened and this burner cannot be operated. By this means, While the valves are located in close proximity to their respective bflrn'ers, the opening of the gas-way leading to either burner when the other is in operation is prevented and the simultaneous operation of the two burners is made impossible. If desired the bar, E, may be provided with a shoulder or arm, F located below the cam, G, whereby, when the valve, 0, is closed'the bar, E, is moved positively downward by the action of the cam, G. This, however, is not essential as, in case the bar, E, does not fall by gravity, it will, when the valve, C, is opened, be moved downward, so that the shoulder, F, will contact with the cam, G, by the action of the cam, or stop, G, on theshoulder, F.
I do not claim broadly herein the combiin the case shown by rotation to the nation with a gas stove having gas inlets toupper and lower burners on the same side thereof, of means for locking one burner when the other is in operation, non broadly, the combination with a gas stove of a vertically movable member provided with valvelocking means as these are not of my invention.
What I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. In a gas stove having upper and lower inlets thereto through adto a corner thereof, a vertically movable member located at said corner and having upper and lower lugs projecting therefrom at right angles to one another, and corresponding positioned projections upon the valve stems, adapted to make contact respec- 654 tively with said lugs when the valve stems are turned to open the valves. 1
2. In a gas stove having upperjand lower burners and gas inlets thereto through vadjacent sides of the stove, valves for said inlets located in close proximity to the burners, stems for said valves lying in planes which intersect at a corner of the stove, a vertically movable member lying substantially inthe line of intersection 75 of said planes and means operated by the movement of said member for locking one of said burners from operation when the other of said burners is in use.
