GAS-COCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, LiioN Biinann, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Quebec city, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas cocks, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and effective device which will automatically lock the cock when closed, and which will require a manual operation to unlock the same before the 'gas can pass through the cock.
With the above object in view, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention. progresses, the improvement resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, accompanying this specification, there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, it being understood, however, that the showing therein is merely illustrative and that changes in the minor details of construction, such as size, shape, proportion, etc., which fall within the scope of the appended claim, may be made, if desired.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is an elevation of a cock constructed in accordance Fig. 2 1s a verwith the present invention. tieal transverse sectional view taken upon the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken upon the line 33 of Fig. 1. p
The gas cock is primarily #adapted' for use in connection with gas stoves, but, of course, is susceptible for use in connection with illuminating gas burners; In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body or casing of the cock. This body 1 has integrally connected thereto a threaded inlet port 2 and an outlet port 3. The port 3 may be provided with a suitable burner if desired, and the said burner may have a flame adjusting cap. The casinglis formed with the usual threaded core which is ar-' ranged transversely of the inlet and outlet I Specification of Letters Patent.

sets or shoulders provided by thesaid recess are adapted to limit the movement of the valve so as to bring its port 7 into register with the ports 2 and 3 when the gas 1s to be turned on and so as to limit the movement of the said plug in an opposite direction when the flow of gas is to be turned oli. The plug 6 is provided with the usual operating handle 8, and the said plug 1s further provided with a vertically arranged. slot 9. This slot 9 has its inner wall preferably beveled or inclined from the top to the bottom of the said slot,'and the slot is arranged at an angle with relation to the pin 5.
The numeral 9 designates the automatic locking member for the cock. This member 9 comprises an elongated body portion 10 having a head 11 and having its inner face adjacent its upper portion provided with the spring 12, the latter adapted to be received within a suitable recess formed in the upper portion of the inner wall of the slot 9. The spring '12 is adapted to exert an outward pressure upon the body 10, and the lower portion of the said body is provided with a reduced extension 14. This portion 14 is adapted to receive a lock bar 15, the latter projecting beyond each of the is provided with a depression 16 which is adapted to receive the inner portion of the lock bar 15, and the outerportion of the said lock bar is adapted to engage with the shoulder provided by the recess formed upon thecasing opposite to that engaged by the pin 5 when the plug is turned so as to prevent the passage of gas therethrough. When the cock is to be opened to allow the passage of gas therefrom, a pressure is can erted upon the head '11 of the lock, thus forcing the lock bar rearwardly within the slot 9 so that the projecting portion of the lock bar is free of the said shoulder and the handle 8 may be rotated without further interference of the said lock bar until the same is stopped by the pin '5 contacting the shoulder of the recess previously contacted by the projecting portion of the lock bar.
The tapering plug- When the-gas is to be turned off noattention will be paid to the lock 9, as the lock bar of the same will automatically spring into. position after the pin 5 contacts with the opposite shoulder formed by the recess.
The advantages of the arrangement. as disclosed is"apparent from the fact that with my device it is impossible to accidenably arranged adjacent the gas stoves, so
that the same will be arranged out of the sight of persons not acquainted with the operation of the cock, and this materially adds to thesaiety of suchdevices.
Having thus fully described the said invention, what I claim i.:-
A stop cock inclulling a casing hating the usual ports and a tapering bore communicating with the ports, a tapering plug having an opening communicating with the ports, a pin upon the plug, the casing ha *ing the usual recess forming the oppositely arranged shoulders, an automatic lock, the plug being provided with a slot having its inner Wall inclined the receptimi of the lock, the
said plug being provide 1 with a depression, the extremity provided and upper o n gaging Within the recess, the lower extremity of the lock having a lock bar projecting be yond each of the thereof, one of said projecting portions engaging within the depression of the plug, the projecting portion of the lock bar adapted to engage the shoulder of the recess of the (using opposite to that -'occupied by the pin of the plug when the cock is in the chard gw ilicnj'. l lock being provided a ing beyond. the plug, to be contacted to .t'o the pl recess and the lock l 1r out or with the shoulder when the said plu; be rotated to open the cock.
In testimony whereof l eilir. my signature in presence of two witm 1S LEON into MED.
