STOP-COCK FOR GAS-BURNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,315, dated July 8, 1902.
Application filed March 18, 1902. Serial No. 98,752. (N0 model-3 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GLENN D. GIBBS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at littsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop-Cocks for Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in stop-cocks for gasburners, and relates more particularly to lighting devices for gas-burners.
The object of the present invention is to provide a pilot-li ht in a gas-burner by means of turning a valve in one direction, and when the valve is reversed to close both the pilotlight and main supply, thereby shutting off the by-pass to the pilot-light and the main supply with one operation of the valve.
The presentinvention further aims to construct a device of this character that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,and Wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved valve and by-pass. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a part of the plugvalve.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents a casing having a gas-inlet 2 and a discharge-opening 3, between which is arranged a valve 4. The said valve has formed therein a recess 6, which surrounds a central shoulder 6, and a beveled face 6 is formed on the valve on the upper side of the recess. This valve carries a valve-stem 7 and a handle inlet 2 and the exit 3 and by-pass 10.
8, provided on one side with an extending lug 9. A by-pass 10 is formed in the casing of the valve, communicating with the exit 3 and recess 6, leading to the inlet 2. In said by-pass is secured a regulating-screw '11, the adj ustment of which will regulate the amount of gas to flow through the by-pass to supply the pilot-light.
The plug is constructed with the shoulder 6 for two reasons-first, to give greater contact-surface with the valve-seat, and, secondly, for the purpose of holding the core in position to form the recess. The shoulder 6 is beveled to permit the easy removal of the core after the plug is molded.
The operation of my improved stop-cock for gas-burners is as follows: When it is desired to shut off the main supply and retain the pivot-light, the device is operated to the position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, turning the handle 8 of the valve-stem '7 to the right, and when it is desired to shut off both the main supply and pilot-light the valve is turned in the opposite direction, thereby shutting off both the supply from the The lug 9 will readily indicate the position of the valve when the handle is to be turned.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying'drawings.
Attention is directed to the fact that when the valve is turned to the stop in one direction both the pilot-light and the main supply will be shut off and that when the valve is turned in the opposite direction to the stop the main supply will be shut off, but the pilot-light will be permitted to bu rn,this being accomplished by the peculiar formation of the recess formed in the valve.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
