VBe it known that I, -WILLIAM A.' HEIL- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark in the county of Essex and State of New jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make andl use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication. I

The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in frames for traveling bags, satchels, and the like; and,the invention has reference, more particularly to that class of bag-frames, known in the art as L-frames, that is, a bag-frame, comprising a pair of hinged frame-sections, each frame-section being AL-shaped in cross-section, one of the frame-sections having a'lock mountedupon its outer and upper surface,

and the other frame section having, in the ordinary practice, secured upon the outer face of its vertical member a hasp-plate provided with right-angled hasp-lugs adapted to engage the lock when the frame-sections are closed. l

With frames of this construction,A when covered with leather, to sew the bag-body thereto, at the place where the hasp-plate is secured upon the outer face of the framesection, in the manner above described, it is necessary with machine-sewing' to arrest the sewing operation and to throw the line of stitching away from the frame, out of alinement with the main line of stitching, in order to pass around the hasp-plate, all of which is objectionable on account of the loss of time during the sewing operation, as well as the danger of striking the hasp-plate with the needle, aside from the fact that in fitting the leather of the mouth of the bagbody about the hasp-plate, a bulky and unsightly `appearance will result at that point upon the outervface of the frame-section. f

The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to take the cheaperv construction of L-frame, cover the same with leather and adapt the hasp-plate and 'its hasp-lugs to one of the frame-sections in such a manner, so that the mouth of the bagbody can be readily sewed thereto bymeans o fmachine-stitching or sewinfr in one continuous operation, and when finished to all appearances the finished bag having the appearance of the more expensive bags, knownY in the trade as English or sewed-in bags.

A further object `of the present invention is to save cost, `time and labor during the sewing .operation and to provide a neat and improved appearance by reason of thel primarily, in the bag-frame and hasp-plateV therefor, mounted with relation to one of the frame-sections 1n the manner yhereinafter more fully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, yin the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices andparts, aswell as inthe details of the construction of the same, all of which will be morey fully described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specication.

The invention is clearly illustrated-in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top or plan View of fragmentary portions of the two frame-sections of the usual L-shaped construction, one of which is provided with a hasp-plate and the hasp-plate, looking in the direction of the arrow in said Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section, on an enlarged scale of the frame-section represented in said Fig. 2, said section being taken on line 3-3 in the said Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is a similar sectional representation of the frame-section provided with a modified arrangement of mounting the haspplate.

Similar' characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

In the said drawings, the reference- characters 1 and 2 indicate thc usual metal bagframe sections, the frame-section 1 being provided with the usual vertical right-angled member 3, see Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the frame-section 2 being similarly provided with the usual vertical right-angled member 4, as illustrated in all of the igures of the drawings. Referring now to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the said drawings, it will be seen that the said frame- sections 1 and 2 have a suitable covering 5 of leather or any other suitable material which extends also around the right- angled members 3 and 4 of the respective frame-sections, each covering or envelop 5 terminating in outwardly and forwardly extending sewing iianges, as G, extending along the marginal edge-portions 7 of the frame-sections, and over which the mouth-portions 8 of the leather or other bag-body are placed and secured thereto by means of a continuous line of machine stitching or sewing, as 9. Suitably secured upon the upper face of the said covered frame-section 1 is the usual bag-lock, as 10, with which the hasp-lugs 13 of a haspeplate 11 are adapted to enter into locked engagement when the two frame- sections 1 and 2 are brought into their closed relation.

As shown more particularly in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the framesection 2 is pierced, as at 15, the covering 5 being correspondingly pierced, as at 16 and 17.

The hasp-plate 11 is secured upon the inner covered face of the member 4 of the frame-section 2 by means of rivets 14, or other suitable fastening means, the haspplate being provided with upwardly extending arms or posts 12 which are passed into and through the said perforations or holes 15, 16 and 17. As illustrated in said Fig. 2, said arms or posts 12 are provided with the previously mentioned hasp-lugs 18. In order to bring the outer face-portions of the said arms or posts 12 vertically in alinement with the outer face of the member 4 of the frame-section 2, each arm or post 12 is preferably bent, as at 18, whereby a neat construction and an artistic finish is the result.

If desired, the hasp-plate 12 may be mounted upon the inner face of the member cross-section, I have produced a frame of f cheap construction in the nature ofV a sewed-in frame, to which the mouth of the bag-body can be sewed by stitching, continuously from one end of the Vbag-frame to the other end thereof, in a straight line,

thereby producing a neat, quick and easy method of sewing, which saves time, labor and expense, and at the same time produces a bag of neat appearance, and one in which the mouth of the bag-body is sewed fast at all points to the frame-sections 0f the bagframe.

Of course, I am fully aware that changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described in the said specication, nor do I confinev myself to the exact details of the construe` tion as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

1. A bag-frame comprising a pair of hinged frame-sections of angular cross-section, a covering upon each framesection, each covering having a sewing liange extending in an outward direction from the outer marginal edge-portion of each frameico section, said flanges being adapted to be 10- Y cated beneath the edge-p0rtion of the mouth of a bag-body and further adapted to receive a continuous straight line of stitching closely to the said outer marginal edge of each frame-section, combined witha haspplate secured to one of said frame-sections having hasp-lug carrying posts extending from the upper surface-portion of said frame-section at points back of the outer face of the angular member connected with the main member of said frame-section.

A bag-frame comprising a pair of frame-sections, each frame-section consisting of a main body-member and a depending member integrally connected therewith, so as to provide a frame-section of L-shaped cross section, and a hasp-plate secured to one of said frame-sections having hasp-lug carrying posts extending from the upper surface-portion of said frame-section at points back of the outer face of the said depending member, each post being provided with an angularly bent portion extending forwardly in a direction toward the marginal edge formed by the angle of the said main body-member and the said depending member, all arranged so as to bring the outer face-portions of the said posts vertically in alinement with the outer face-portion of the said depending member.

8. A bag-frame comprising a pair of frame-sections, each frame-secti0n Vconsisting of a main body-member and a depending member integrally connected therewith, so as to provide a frame-section of L-shaped cross section, said main body-member being provided with openings, and a hasp-plate secured to the inner surface portion of one of said members, hasp-lug carrying posts connected with said hasp-plate, said posts extending into and through the said openings and extending from the upper surface portion of the said main body-member of said frame-section, each post being provided with an angularly bent portion extending forwardly in ay direction toward the marginal edge formed by the angle of the said main body member and the said depending member, all arranged so as to bring the outer surface portions of the said posts vertically lin alinement with the outer face-portions of the said depending member.

4. A bag-frame comprising a pair of frame-sections, each frame-section consisting of a main body-member and a depending member integrally connected therewith, so as to provide a frame-section of L-shaped cross section., said main body-member being provided with openings, and a hasp-plate Secured to the inner surface portion of said depending member, hasp-lug carrying posts connected with said hasp-plate and extending from the upper surface portion of the said main body-member of said frame-section, each post being provided with an angularly portion extending forwardly in a direction toward the marginal edge formed by the angle of the said main body-member and the said depending member, all arranged so as to bring the outer face portions of the said posts vertically in alinement with the outer face-portions of the said depending member.
