siding at Newark, in the county of Essex' and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Metal Bag-Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The present invention which is a division of my former application, Serial No. 133,287, and filed November 25, 1916, has reference, generally, to improvements in frames for traveling bags, satchels, and the like; and, the invention has reference, more particularly to that class of bag-frames, known in the art as L-frames, that is, a bag-frame comprising a pair of hinged frame-sections, each frame-section being L- shaped in cross-section, one of the framesections having a lock mounted upon its outer and upper surface, and the other frame-section having, inthe ordinary practice, secured upon the outer face of its vertical member a hasp-plate provided with right-angled hasp-lugs adapted to engage the lock when the frame-sections are closed.

`With frames of this construction, when covered with leather, to sew the bag-body thereto, at the place where the hasp-plate is secured upon the outer face of the framesection, in the manner above described, it is necessary with machine-sewing to arrest the sewing operation and to throw the line of stitching away from the frame, out of alinement with the main line of stitching, in order to pass around the hasp-plate, all of which is objectionable on account of the loss of time during the sewing operation, aswell as the danger of striking; the haspplate with the needle, aside from the fact that in fitting the leather of the mouth of the bag-body about the hasp-plate, a bulky and unsightly appearance will result at that point upon the outer face of the framesection.

struction of L-frame, cover the same with leather and adapt the hasp-plate and its hasp-lugs to one of the frame-sections in such a' manner, sothat the mouth of the bag-body can be readily sewed thereto by means of machine-stitching or sewing in one continuous operation, and when finished to all appearances the bag having the appearance of the more expensive bags, known in the trade as English or sewed-in bags.

A further object of the present invention is to save cost, time and labor during the sewing operation and to provide a neat and improved appearance by reason of the evenness and continuity of the machine-stitching and doing away with the possibility of eX- posing a portion of the raw edge of the mouth of the bag at the point where it has to be lapped around the hasp-plate when the latter is secured upon the outer vertical face of the frame-section.

Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of my present invention.

`lVith the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the bag-frame and haspplate therefor, mounted with relation to one of the frame-sections in the manner hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following` specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.

The invention is clearly illustra-ted in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top or plan view of fragmentary portions of the two frame-sections ofthe usual L-shaped construction, one of which is provided with a hasp-plate and hasp-lugs in the manner of the present invention, said view showing in connection with the leather-covered frame-sections, fragmentary portions of the mouth of the bag-body, sewed thereto by continuous and uninterrupted straight lines of machinestitching or sewing, the two frame-sections being represented in their partially opened relation.

Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section, on an enlarged scale of one of the frame-sections represented in said Fig. 1, said section being taken on line 2-2 in said Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a similar sectional representation of the frame-section provided with a modified arrangement of mounting the hasp-plate, but being made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

1 and 2 have a suitable covering 5 of leather or any other suitable material which extends also around the right-angled members 3 and l of the respective trame-sections, each covering or envelop 5 terminating in outwardly and forwardly extending sewing flanges, as 6, extending along the marginal edge-portions 7 of the frame-sections. and over which the mouth-portions 8 of the leather or other bag-body are placed and secured thereto by means of a continuous line of machine-stitching or sewing, as 9. Suitably secured upon the upper face of the said covered frame-section 1 is the usual bag-lock, as 10, with which the hasp-lugs 13 of the upwardly extending arms or posts 12 of a hasp-plate 11 are adapted to enter into locked engagement when the two Jframe-

As shown more particularly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the Jframe-section 2 is pierced, as at 15, the covering 5 being correspondingly pierced, as at 16.

As illustrated in said Fig. 2, the haspplate 11 may be secured upon .the lower or under face of the main member of the frame-section 2, by means of rivets 14, or other suitable Jfastening means, the said hasp-plate 11, as has been stated, being provided with the upwardly extending arms or posts, as 12, which extend into and through the

15 and 16 in the frame-section 2 and covering 5, respectively, the said arms or posts 12 being preferably bent, as at 17. The said arms or posts 12 are also provided at ltheir upper ends with the rearwardly extending hasp-lugs 13, herein-above mentioned.

In Fig. 3 otl the drawings, I have shown a slightly modified Jform of hasp-plate, as 18, which is mounted upon the upper face of the main member of the frame-section 2, by means of rivets 19, or other suitable fastening means, the said hasp-plate 18 being provided with upwardly projecting arms or posts 2O which extend into and through 'the perforations 16 of the covering 5, and are provided with the rearwardly' extending hasp-lugs 2l, similar to and for the same purposes as the previously mentioned hasplugs 13 of the construction represented in said Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.

From the foregoing description ot the present invention it will be seen that by the novel arrangement of the hasp-plate with relation to the metal bag-frame ot L-shaped cross-section, I have produced a frame of cheap construction in the nature of a sewed-in frame, to which the mouth of the bag-body can be sewed by stitching, continuously from one end of the bag-frame to the other end thereof, ina straight line, thereby producing a neat, quick and easy method of sewing, which saves time, labor and expense, and at the same time produces a bag of neat appearance, and one in which the mouth of the bag-body is sewed fast at all points to the trame-sections of the bagframe.

Of course, I am fully aware that changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I coniine myself to the exact details of the construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

I claim 1. A bag-frame comprising a pair of hinged frame-sections, each frame-section comprising a main body-member and a depending angular member integral with said main body-member, s0 as to provide a frame section of L-shaped cross section, a covering upon each frame-section, each covering having a sewing flange extending in an outward direction from the outer marginal edge-portion located at the angle formed between the said main body-member and the depending member of each frame section, said flanges being adapted to be l0- cated beneath the edge-portions of the mouth of a bag-body and further adapted to receive a continuous straight line of stitching closely to the said outer marginal edge of each frame-section, combined with` a hasp-plate secured to the said main bodymember having hasp-lug carrying posts extending from the upper surface-portion of said main body-member at points back of the outer face of the said depending member connected with said main body-member of the said frame-section.

2. A bag-frame comprising a pair of frame-sections, each frame-section consisting of a main body-member and a depending member integrally connected therewith, so as to provide a frame-section of L-shaped cross section, and a hasp-plate secured to the main body-member of one of said framesections having hasp-lug carrying posts extending from the upper surface-portion of said frame-section at points back of the outer face of the said depending member.

3. A bag-frame comprising a. pair of frame-sections, each frame-section consisting of a main body-member and a depending member integrally connected therewith, so as to provide a frame-section of L- shaped cross section, and a hasp-plate secured to the main body member of one of said frame-sections having hasp-lug carrying posts extending from the upper surfaceportion of said frame-section at points back of the outer face of the said depending member, each post being provided with an angularly bent portion extending forwardly in a direction toward the marginal edge formed by the angle of the said main bodymember and the said depending member, all arranged so as to bring the outer face-portions of the said posts vertically in alinement with the outer face-portion of the said depending member.

4. A bag-frame comprising a pair of frame-sections, each frame-section consisting of a main body-member and a depending member integrally connected therewith,

so as to provide a frame-section of L-shaped cross section, said main body-member being provided with openings, and a hasp-plate secured to the under or lower surface-portion 0f the main body of one of said meinbers, liasp-lug carrying posts connected with 'said hasp-plate, said posts extending into and through the said openings and extending from the upper surface portion of the said main body-member of said frame-section.

5. A bag-frame comprising a pair of frame-sections, each frame-section consisting of a main body-member and a depending member integrally connected therewith, so as to provide a frame-section of L-shaped cross section, said main body-member being provided with openings, and a hasp-plate secured to the under or lower surface-portion of the main body of one of said members, hasp-lug carrying posts connected with said hasp-plate, said posts extending into and through the said openings and extending from the upper surface portion of the said main body-member of said frame-section, each post being provided with an angularly bent portion extending forwardly in. a direction toward the marginal edge formed by the angle of the said main body member and the said depending member, all arranged so as to bring the outer surface portions of the said, posts ,vertically alinement with the outer face-portions of the said depending member.
