nUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. SISBOWER, OF EAST. ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, AND LOUIS EDWARD PITTONI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS T0 NEW YORK COUCH BED COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK. Y
FOLDING BED.
Application filed June 30, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE F. SIsBowER, a citizen of the United States, residing. at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, and LoUis EDWARD PrrroNI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, the following being a full, clear, and exact disclosure of the one form of our invention which we at present deem preferable.
For a detailed description of the present form of our invention, reference may be had to the following specification and to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective viewV of our bed with one side thereof folded down;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof in a partly folded condition;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view thereof in its completely folded condition;
Fig. l is an end elevation of the bed when opened and Fig. 5 shows a detail.
Our folding bed is one particularly intended to be used as a crib, with both its ends and sides foldable on the main frame on the upper side thereof, and its legs foldable against the frame on the lower side thereof.
A represents a rectangular metal frame with a metallic mattress-fabric stretched thereon in the usual manner. To the end pieces of the main frame are secured, at the several corners of the frame, short extension pieces a in which are pivoted the bottom rails C of the folding sides. The pivotal points of the respective sides are at different elevations so that they may fold down upon the main frame in different planes. T o the side bars of the main frame are pivoted the vertical bars B of the two end frames, which are of bowed form with top and bottom rails curved inward at the ends so that, when folded down upon the main frame, they will lie outside of the folded sides and embrace the same with any stuffed mattress which may be contained between the folded sides and the spring fabric. The legs F are also pivoted to the sides of the main frame A and each leg, near its upper end, is jointed to a link E which extends to the lower end Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
Serial No. 776,556.
of the upright B at the opposite end of the main frame and is jointed thereto. By this means the folding movement of the ends is communicated to the legs and vice versa.
' The two legs at each end are 'joined by a rod G on which are the large rollers 'or casters g and also the small rollers or casters g2. These two sets of casters correspond to the different angular positions of the legs, the rollers or casters g2 coming into operation when the legs are unfolded, as in Fig. 1, and the other set of casters g coming into operation when the legs are partly folded, as in Fig. lVhen the sides are unfolded the top rails D thereof engage the vertical bars B at the ends, as shown in Fig. 5, there being a notch in the end of each bar D which will spring over and embrace the edge of the corresponding bar B. By this means the bed will be locked in its unfolded position. When the bed is completely folded, as shown in Fig. 3, it becomes easily portable, while it may be either folded or unfolded in a moment and, when unfolded, is locked in that position by the simple locking means aforesai l/Vhat we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:"
1. A folding bed comprising a main frame provided with side and end bars, folding sides pivotally connected to the side bars in different planes to lie in superposed relation spaced from the main frame when in folded position, and folding end frames pivotally attached to said side bars and having offset end portions shaped to overlap and inclose the folding` sides and said side bars, when in folded relation, whereby bedding may be retained between said side frames and the main frame.
2. A folding bed comprising a main frame, folding sides therefor having flat top rails the ends of which are provided with notches, and folding ends having flat upright end bars the longitudinal edges of which interlock with the notches to retain the sides and ends in unfolded position.
3. A folding bed comprising a main frame, folding sides therefor having flat top rails the ends of which are provided with notches, and folding end frames pivoted to the main frame and having offset end` portions provided with flat upright end bars, the longitudinal edges of which interlock with said notches to retain the sides and ends in unfolded position.
4. A folding bed comprising a. main frame having end bars provided with extensions, folding sides pivoted to the extensions in different planes, folding end frames having offset portions provided with upright end bars pivoted to the outer faces of the sides of the main frame near the ends thereof, folding legs also pivoted to the outer faces of sides of the main frame, and links located normally below the level of the main frame, each link connecting` a leg with the folding end frame at the other end of the bed. l5
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands, before two subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of June'7 1913.
GEORGE F. SISBOl/VER. LOUIS EDWARD PITTONI.
