FOLDING COT.
Continuation of application Serial No. 850,156, filed J'uly Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18,1919. 10, 1914. This application filed January 5, 1916,
Serial No. 70AM. Renewed November 7, 1918. Serial No. 261,552.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnPr-r LUPPINO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Cot, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, this being a continuation of the application for Letters Patent for a folding crib or cot, Serial No. 850,156,.filed by me on July 10, 1914.
The invention relates to furniture and its object is to provide a new and improved folding cot which can be readily folded to take up very little room for storing, shipping or other purposes, or which can be extended Without much physical exertion on the part of the operator, the cot when in extended position having its parts securely locked to prevent accidental folding.
In order to produce the desired result,
use is made of a frame provided at itssides near the ends of the frame with pivots, legs having extensions provided with slots through which extend the said pivots to allow the legs to swing and to slide on the said pivots, and heads having angular arms pivoted on the ends of the said frame and pivotally connected with the ends of the said leg extensions.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cot in extended position;
Fig. 2 is a similar View of the same folded;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged end elevation of the cot extended;
Fig. 4; is a sectional side elevation of part of the same on the line Jr- 1 of Fig. 3.;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of part of the cot; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged section.
To the frame 10 of rectangular shape is attached a bed spring 11 of any approved construction, and the sides of the frame 10 are provided near their ends with pivots 12 engaging slots 13 formed in extensions 14 of legs 15, preferably provided at their lower ends with rollers or casters 16, as plainly indicated in the drawings. The upper ends of the extensions 141 of the legs 15 are connected by pivots 17 with horizontally ex tending arms 18 of heads 19 pivotally con nected at the arms 18 by pivots 20 with.
to facilitate the uniform opening and clos- 111g movement of the legs 15 at the end of the cot. The frame 10 is preferably of angle irons suitably strengthened at the ends by braces 28, and the legs 15 are likewise made of angle irons with the upper portions of the transverse members out out to allow close folding of the legs relatively to the frame 10 (see Figs. 3, 4E and 6). By the arrangement described, the heads 19 can be swung inwardly and downwardly to extend approximately parallel with the frame 10 directly above the same, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. In swinging the heads 19 in the manner described, the extension arms 18 impart a swinging motion to the legs 15 so that the latter move upward and inward toward the frame 10, as indicated in Fig. 2. It will be noticed that .when the heads 19 are swung downwardly and inwardly the extension arms 18 first impart an upward movement to the frame 10 until the pivots 12 are at theupper ends of the slots 13, and then the pivotal connection between the extension arms 18 and the extensions 14 cause an upward and inward swinging movement of the legs 15 and at the same time an outward sliding movement is given to the legs 15 until the pivots 12 reach the other ends of the slots 13, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. In a like manner when it is desired to extend the cot the operator swings the heads 19 upwardly and outwardly and in so doing the legs are caused to slide inwardly toward each other and then begin to swing outward at the same time lowering the frame 10 until the several parts reach the position shown in Fig. 1. The lower ends of the legs 15 are preferably bent outwardly so that the rollers or casters 16 are located outwardly from a vertical plane passing through the pivots 12 to prevent accidental closing of the legs 15 at the time the cot is in extended position, as shown in the drawings.
' claim as new and Patent:
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described, the operator can readily extend 01 fold the cot without much physical exertion, it being understood that during both the folding and extending operations the rollers or casters 16 travel on the floor so as to insure an easy movement of the several parts. 7
If desired, each end of the cot can be singly extended or folded, but if the cot is not unusually long both heads 19 can be readily grasped atthe two ends by the op erator to swing the heads 19 either downward and inward or-upward and outward in folding or extending the cot as above explained.
Although I have described the invention as a cot it is evident that other articles of furniture such as cribs, beds and the like can be built on the same lines.
'Having thus described my invention, I desire to secure by Letters 1. A 'folding'crib or cot, comprising a frame provided at its ends with upwardly projecting brackets and near its ends with pivots, a pair of connected legs at each end of the frame, each pair having angular lower ends and theirupper ends projecting above thevframe and provided with longitudinal slots through which the pivots loosely project', and inverted U-shaped heads pivoted to the said brackets and having the lower ends of their side members extending inwardly approximately at right angles and pivoted to the upper ends of the legs.
:2. A folding crib or cot, comprising a rectangular frame formed of angle irons provided on their upper faces at the ends with brackets and on their Side faces adjacent the ends with pivots, and a pair of connected legs, formed of angle iron, at each end of the frame, the upper portion of one member of each leg being cut away and the portion of the other member above the cut away portion projecting above the frame and provided with longitudinal slots through which the said pivots loosely work, and inverted U-shaped heads having at the lower ends of their side members inwardly extending arms pivoted to the said brackets and to the upper ends of the legs.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH LUPPINO.
