GARBAGE-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. (i, 1917.
Application led September 22, 1916. Serial No. 121,669.
'To all whom Ait may concern.'
lic it known that I, 'Enna NICKUM, a ritizen of the lvnited States` residing at South Bethlehem. county of Northampton. and Sta te of Pennsylvania. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage- Fans. of which the following is a specitication.
My invention relates to improvements in garbage cans. the object of the invention being to provide a can which will be entirely` sanitary, which. can he easily emptied, and which can be thoroughly cleaned from time to time so as to prevent an accumulation of germs and poisonous matters in crevices such as is common with ordinary cans in use.
Heretofore, garbage cans have been universally made with seams, corners, or crevices of some sort which form pockets for the lodgment of decaying matter, and which, even though the can is kept reasonably clean cannot be dislodged, and keep the can in an unsanitary, dangerous condition.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide a can which is without seam, corner, or crevice of any sort in the interior thereof, and which can be readily emptiedI and cleaned, and at the same time, I provide a can which on the outside has the general appearance of an ordinary can and which is not liable to be upset in use.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations Vand arrangements of parts as Will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation, illustrating my improved can.
Fig. 2 is a. View in longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Q Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
1 represents the body of the can which is composed of a single piece of metal, drawn, pressed, or stamped so as to form a semispherical bottom 2 which merges into the. side walls of the receptacle and presents a smocth surface throughout the interior of the can.
The body 1 is`of general cylindrical form and is supported by a ring 3. The ring is of cylindrical form. and of the same. diameter as body 1. The ring 2l is provided at its upper end with an inwardly and down- 'wardly projecting fiange l conforming in shape to the shape of the outer fare. of bottom This flange 4 provides an extended support foi-.the bottom 2, and is brazed, soldered, welded. or otherwise secured to the bottom 2 without leaving any roughness or obstruction to the inner face of the can.
The ring 3 is of Such a height that it holds the bottom 2 ofvthe body 1` off the ground and provides a 'firm support for the body to prevent its accidental tilting.
A removable cover :'rtits the upper open -en'd of body 1. A pivoted bail (l is provided for carrying the can and a handle T is secured, to ring 3. By holding the bail (S in one hand and grasping the handle 7 with the other hand, the can can be emptied without the hands coming in'contact with the contents of the can.
A slight blow or jar will dislodge any particle sticking to the can, andnby using hot Water from time to time, the can can be kept in a perfectly sanitary condition.
Various slight changes may be made in the general form and arrangement of parts .described without departing from my invention. and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myselfv at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall withinthe spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A can comprising a body having a semispherical bottom, a cylindrical-ring of the same diameter as the can, and having an inwardly and dmvnwardly projecting flange at its upper end securedto. the bottom of the Can.\
2. A ban of the character described, Com- 5 prising a body ot' general cylindrical form having a semi-spherical bottom, va rylindrical ring' of thesame diameter as the body of the can, said ring having at its upper end an inwardly and d0\\'n\\'a1dly project,-
10 ing flange secured to the bottom of the body,
a removable cover on the can, a bail pvotally connected to the body of the can, and a handle secured to the ring. t
In testimony whereof I have `signed my name to this specification in the presence of 15 two subscribing witnesses.

JAMES B. STENSHAD.
