Description

WILLIAM 'W. WHITAKER.
Improvement in Gloves.
121,833, I I Patented Dec. 12,1871.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM W. WHITAKER, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,833, dated December 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. WHITAKER, of Gloversville, in thecounty ofFulton and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gloves, of which the following is a specification In the manufacture of gloves two things are of importance, the first of which is to so form them that the seams or places where the parts are joined to each other shall be exposed to the least possible amount of wear; and, secondly, to construct them in such a manner that they shall neatly fit the hand of the wearer. The production of a glove which shall possess the advantages above alluded to is the object of this invention; and to this end it consists in forming the inside or palm portion of a glove in two pieces, formed as hereinafter described, as a consequence of which the seam caused by uniting these two portions is removed from that part thereof which is exposed to the greatest amount of wear, and a neatlyfitting glove is formed without any seam where the thumb joins the index finger.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the back or cloth portion of a glove when made according to my improved plan, showing the form into which such portion is to be cut. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the inner or leather portions of the glove, showing the thumb portion turned back, and showing also how the two parts are united to each other and to the back and cloth. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the upper or thumb portion of the inside or leather part of the glove. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the lower portion of the same.
Corresponding letters and numerals refer to corresponding parts in all the figures.
In making gloves of this character I use for the outside or back cloth or any other suitable material, cut in the form represented atA in Figs.
1 and 2, while for the palm or inner portion I use, by preference, leather, it being divided into two parts, as shown at B and C in Figs. 2, 3, 4, the part B having slits formed in it, as shown, so as to allow it to be joined to corresponding parts of the outer or cloth portion, and thus form pockets for the three last fingers of the hand. That edge of this part of the glove which is sewed or otherwise joined to the part 0 is to be formed, as shown by the lines 1 and 2, in order that said seam maybe thrown away from that part of the palm of the hand where the greatest amount of wear comes, and thus to a great extent prevent the breaking away of the stitches. This piece B has also a slit formed in its inner end to allow of its being buttoned closely around the wrist of the wearer. That part of the glove which is shown at (1, Fig. 3, and which also forms aportion of the palm of the glove, is formed substantially as shown, so as to form the inside of the first or index finger and thumb, in such a manner that no seam is required between the two. That portion of this part which is marked with the numerals l and 2 is joined to that portion of B on which the same numerals are placed, its opposite edge being joined to the cloth, so that when the parts are all united a neatly-fitting glove is formed.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The parts B and U of a glove, constructed as shown and described, and combined with the outer part A, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM W. WHITAKER.
