Description

W. M. MILLER.
CONDIMENT HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 2. 1915.
Patented Feb. 20, 1917.
emma WILLIAM M. MILLER, 0F AZUSA, CALIFORNIA.
CONDIMENT-HOLDEB.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Azusa, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Condiment-Holders,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to condiment holders, and it has for its object to produce a simple and improved condiment holder having compartments for containing two different condiments, such as salt and pepper, a sifting top communicating with both compartments, and means whereby the one compartment is obstructed, while the other is left open to permit its contents to be sifted out.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of the class described havf ing a stationary sifting top and a slidable obstructing member movable thereon.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the manner of mounting the stationary sifting top and the obstructing slide movable thereon.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularlypointed out in the claim.
In the accompanyin drawing has been illustrated a simple an preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifica tions within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when" desired.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a condiment holder constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view ofthe same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view takenearthenware, glass or vitreous material of any kind, has 1n the drawing been shown as being of rectangular cross section, tapering Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented vF91 20, 191%, Application filed November 2, 1915. Serial No. 59,254. y
from the bottom in an upward direction,
said body being in the nature of a box or contalner 15 having two' compartments 16,- 17 whlch are separated by a vertical partition 18. The side walls of the box are pro vided near the upper end thereof with grooves 19. The stationary sifting to 20 is made preferabl of sheet metal, an provided with ownturned flanges 21 at the side edges thereof, said flanges being inset it is into the grooves 19 of the box or container.
mit the sifting therethrou h of the. contents of said compartments, suc as salt and peper, although obviously the container may e used for condiments, of any kind. The bottom of the container is provided with openings 25, 26 communicating with the respective compartments 16, 17 for the purpose of filling the latter, said openings obstructed by stoppers 27 of cork or other suitable material. I
It will be observed that by insetting the side flanges 21 of the stationary sifting cover 20 intothe grooves 19, the latter is given a dovetail form, clearly'seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thereby enabling an obstructing member 28 to be slidably mounted on said sifting cover, said obstructing member being provided with downturned flanges 29 engaging the dovetail flange 21, and said obstructing member being also provided at the ends thereof with upturned flanges 30 afiording finger holds, whereby the slide may be readily moved from one end of the sifting top to the other, thereby obstructing one set of perforations while the other set is left uncovered.
It is obvious that when the compartments of the device are-filled'with condiments and the perforations communicating with one of said com artments are obstructed, the contents of t e other compartment may be readily sifted out. By simply pushing the obstructing member 28 from one end of the sifting top to the other, the contents of the other compartment will be made available. By adjustmg the obstructing member 28 in being.
ice
an intermediate position, the contents may be simultaneously sifted from the two compartments, the relative proportions being invention, what is claimed as new, 1s:-
A Condiment holder comprising a receptacle of substantially rectangular cross section, said receptacle having a partition extending from the top to the bottom thereof, and said receptacle bein provided with longitudinal grooves near t e upper end thereof, in combination with a sifting top having side flanges bent into the longitudinal 15 sifting top, whereby said obstructing member may be adjusted to entirely obstruct one 20 compartment and also to partly obstruct the two compartments of the receptacle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
