Be it known that I, THEODORE RossBAoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Condiment-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to condiment holders and has for an object to provide a receptacle of simple and durable construction for containing condiments such as salt and pepper.

The invention embodies, among other features, a holder which incloses a container having a plurality of compartments therein for containing salt and pepper or other condiments, with lids movable on the holder and adapted to normally close the said compartment-s, a handle being provided for transporting the stand or holder from one place to another and also having connection with the lids for moving the same into open or closed position.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, one of the lids being shown in open position; Fig. 2 is a plan view, a portion of the handle having been broken away to disclose the underlying structure; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.

Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a holder 10, preferably consisting of a series of bands 11 arranged in spaced horizontal positions and connected with supporting legs 12, two of the oppositely arranged supporting legs being formed to project a slight distance beyond the uppermost band 11 to form bearings 13 of a spring-like nature, a container lt, preferably made of glass, being encircled by the holder 10 as shown, and provided with a vertically arranged partition 15, forming compartments 16, 17 in the container 14:, the said compartments being adapted to contain condiments such as salt and pepper.

nection with the container 14: and provided with a diametrically extending cross bar 149, against which the straight edges of the lids 18, 19 are adapted to abut when the lids are in closed position and reposing upon the perforated sifter 14 as shown in Fig. 3.

Secured to the lids 18, 19 and extending radially from the medial port-ions of the circular edges thereof are hinge members 20 having pivotal connection with the bearings 13 by passing pins 21 through the hinge members 20 and the bearings 13 as shown, the mentioned hinge members 20 being of a fork-like nature with the bearings 13 interposed between the forked portions thereof as shown in Fig. 2 and the lower edges of the hinge members being flat so that when the lids 18, 19 are moved into open position,

-. portions of the lower flat edges of the hinge members will abut against the flat faces of the supporting legs 12 upon which the hinge members are mounted.

A handle 22, consisting of depending curved arms 23, connected at their upper ends by a cross piece 24, preferably formed integral with the arms 23, is provided for the purpose of carrying the holder 10 and container 11 and also for operating the lids 18, 19, the mentioned handle 22 being of substantially a U-shape and formed of a spring-like material with the lower ends of the arms 23 having pivotal connection with the free ends of the hinge members 20 as shown, the mentioned hinge members 20 at their free ends terminating in ears 25 spaced apart to receive the lower ends of the arms 23 therebetween, thus preventing the handle 22 from swinging out of vertical position. Now when it is desired to remove the condiment in the compartment 16 therefrom, a downward pressure is exerted on that portion of the handle 22 which lies on the side of the holder having the lid 18 mounted thereon, thus resulting in an upward swinging movement of the lid 18 and thereby the compartment 16 will be uncovered sufiiciently to permit of the condiment in the compartment from sifting therefrom when the container 1 1 is tilted, it being readily seen that when the mentioned portion of the handle is pressed downwardly, the spring-like action of the handle will cause a portion of the lower flat edge of the hinge member having the lid 18 thereon to abut against a face of one of the supporting legs and retain the lid in open and locked position, the point of pivotal connection of the handle 22 with the hinge member 20 having the lid 18 thereon, being below the point of pivotal connection of the handle 22 with the hinge member having the lid 19 thereon. If it is desired to open both compartments 16, 17, a downward pressure is exerted on that portion of the handle which lies over the lid 19, thus moving the lid 19 in the same manner as the lid 18 so that the spring-like action of the handle 22 will retain the said lids in open and locked position, it being further seen that when the lids are swung into closed position by pulling upwardly on the handle, the arms 22 of the handle tending to press toward one another will hold the lids in closed and locked position in view of the fact that the point of pivotal connection of the hinge members 20 with the supporting legs 12 will be below the point of connection of the arms 23 of the handle 22 with the hinge members 20.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In a condiment receptacle, the combination with a holder, of a container supported thereby, lids for the said container, hinge members secured to the lids and having pivotal connection with the said holder, a spring-like handle including a cross piece and curved depending arms, the free ends of the said arms having pivotal connection with the free ends of the said hinge members for separately or simultaneously actuating the said lids and for separately or simultaneously locking the said lids in open or closed position.
