CUMEINATEUN SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER Lawrence Doucctte, Venosta, Quebec, Canada application September '7, 1939, Serial No. 293,822
2 Giaims.
This invention relates to improvements in a condiment dispenser. Its primary object being to provide a container for more than one different element and to devise means whereby only one of the elements may be dispensed at one time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a dispenser for salt and pepper or the like wherein both elements are contained in one container and are separated from, each other by a division therein. Means being also provided to dispense one or the other separately through the cap.
With these and other objects in view that may appear while the description proceeds the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which- Fig. l is an elevation of my improved dispenser partially in section.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation through the dividing wall and cap at right angles to Fig. v1.
Fig. 4 is a further sectional elevation through the cap. a
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the washer.
Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation showing a modification of the shaft and closure retaining means.
Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views it will be seen the invention comprises a container It having a central dividing wall H built integral therewith forming two compartments I2 and It for different elements.
A semi-spherical cap M having a threaded collar I5 is secured to the threaded neck It of the container. Said cap is provided with two sets of apertures H and it one being of larger dimensions than the other. These sets of apertures are each grouped at about an angle of 45 from the vertical center line. An outside closure member i9 is mounted on a pivotal shaft 251 rotatably supported in the sides of the cap It. A movable partition member 2! in the shape of a segment is also mounted on the said shaft in fixed relation thereto and on the inside of the cap. Said outer closure is arranged to slide over the surface of the cap and to close the apertures at one side or the other. A position retainer is provided in the form of a slight projection 22 on the underneath side which engages depressions 23 in the cap and retains the closure over one set of apertures. A name plate 24 may be set on the closure and the name Salt on one side and Pepper on the other side to indicate which side is open. 5 The movable partition 2| is equipped with a felt strip 25 set in the face thereof and arranged to engage the inner face of the cap in a manner to prevent the elements passing from one side to the other when the container is inverted. A washer 26 rests on the edge of the neck [6 having a diametrical cross member 21 of felt or similar material against which the rounded edge 28 of the movable partition fits to prevent the elements passing therethrough.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the shaft is shown having two flat portions 29 thereon. These are arranged to register with the position of the closure members in respect to the apertures. A spring 30 engages the shaft and yield- 20 ably holds the same when either of the flat sides are parallel with the spring.
From the foregoing it will be seen that salt and pepper or similar condiments may be placed, one in each side of the container and by manipulation of the closure member the desired element may be shaken therefrom.
t is believed that the construction and advantages of the structure shown may be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing without further detailed description.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of co-operating parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departingfrom the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a condiment dispenser as described, comprising a container having a dividing wall therein, forming two separated compartments, a semispherical cap threadably mounted thereon, apertures in said cap arranged over each of said compartments, outside closure means carried on a pivotal shaft arranged to selectively cover either of said apertures, and means retaining the closure in set position over said apertures, a movable partition carried by said shaft in fixed relation thereto arranged to prevent the contents of one compartment entering the other compartment when the dispenser is inverted, said partition having a resilient strip of material on the periphery thereof arranged to engage the inside surface of the cap.
2. In a condiment dispenser as described, comprising a container having a dividing wall therein, forming two separated compartments, a semispherical cap threadably mounted thereon, apertures in said cap arranged over each of said compartments, outside closure means carried on a pivotal shaft arranged to selectively cover either of said apertures, and means retaining the 010- sure in set position over said apertures, a movable partition carried by said shaft in fixed relation thereto arranged to prevent the contents of one compartment entering the other compartment when the dispenser is inverted, said partition having a resilient strip of material on the periphery thereof arranged to engage the inside surface of the cap, and resilient means supported by the dividing wall against which the lower part of the movable partition bears.
