DISPENSING DEVICE Filed Oct. 15. 1958 v G'ur-p-es Mills Patented Apr. 11, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DISPENSING DEVICE Gurves Mills, Nacogdochcs, Tex. Application October 13, .1938, Serial No. 234,823
Claims.
This invention relates to a dispensing device, and it is particularly an object of the invention to provide a device of thiskind comprised in a top or closure member for a container.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind especially designed for the pouring of salt so that the desired dispensing of salt may be accomplished with a minimum of waste.
afurther object to prowhich, when in position upon a container, a salt pouring pitcher for use in places handling beer for retail trade so that the customer, as is a general practice, may readily salt his drink.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangeparts of my improved dispensing device whereby certain important adhereinafter more fully set forth. 1 The novel features of my invention will here inafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, whereinz- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a dispensing device constructed in acenibodiment of my invention and in applied position;
' Figure2 is a view in top plan of the device as illustrated in Figure 1 with the top plate removed; I
Figure 3 is a view in bottom as herein disclosed;
Figure 4 is a herein disclosed.
As disclosd in plan of the device and towhich is applied my improved dispensing device. As herein disclosed, my improved dispensing device comprises a cap member M hav ing a side flange or skirt l threading upon the open end portion of the container C. This cap member M also includes a plate 2 provided in its marginal portion with' an elongated discharge opening 3, the major axis of which is radial to the center of the plate 2. The outer surface of the .plate 2 is provided with the spout S having side walls 4 arranaged at opposite sides of the openprovides what may be termed view in top plan of the device as 7 advance of such opening 3 as is clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing. The side walls 4 at their central portions are connetced by the interposed plate 1 suitably secured to the outer marginal portions of the side walls 4. This plate 1 assures the spout S being of a structure sufficiently rigid to effectively offset the usage to which the device may be put.
The lower marginal portions of the side walls 4 together with the lower marginal portions of the. front wall 5 are welded or otherwise effectively engaged with the plate 2. Upon proper tilting of the container 0 with the opening 3 unobstructed, the contents of-the container C, such as salt, may be readily poured out with waste substantially eliminated in contradistinction to a shaker for salt or kindred material having a perforated top.
The lower or inner margin of the rear wall 6 is spaced from the plate 2 to provide an opening 8 thru which passes the elongated slide valve 9. This slide valve 9 is of a width substantially equal to the space between the side walls 4 of the spout and of a width greater than the width of the opening 3 so that when the slide valve 9 is at the limit of its upward movement or of its movement within the spout S, flow from within This slide valve 9 is normally maintained in its closed position by a spring arm in slidably disposed through an outstanding eye member H carried by the slide valve at a point rearwardly of the spout S.
This arm I0 is continued from an end of a coil l2 surrounding an outstanding pin l4 carried by the plate 2 and the opposite end of the coil I2 is continued to the plate 2 by an eye member or the like.
Pivotally connected, as at ii, to the plate 2 is the heel portion of a bell crank lever B. This mounting l1 portion 22 at the inner extremity of a push lever 23. This lever 23 is of a length to extend beyond the marginal portion of the plate 2 and has its outer end provided with an enlargement or button 24 to facilitate the depression of said lever 23.
overlying the outer face .of the plate 2 is a second plate 25 substantially 'concavo convex in invention is maintained in applied position upon the plate 2 by the screws 28 which are directed through the plate 2 from below. Each of these screws 28 threads within a block 29 fixed to the plate 25. Each of these blocks 25 in the .complete assembly of the device also contacts with the plate 2 to assure the plates 2 and 25 being maintained in proper relation. h
The extent of opening movement of the slide valve 9 is limited by contact of the leg I8 of the lever B with the hook-like member 30' carried by the plate 2 and partially overlying the inner or rear portion of the valve member 9.
'From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a dispensing device constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention, in
practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:-- v v 1. A dispensing device comprising a plate having a discharge, a valve on the platefor coaction with the discharge, means for normally maintaining the valve in closed position, a lever pivoted to the plate, a second plate carried by the first plate and overlying the valve and lever, between the plates and upon substantial endwise movement between the plates in one direction rocking the lever to move the valve into open position.
2. A dispensing device comprising a plate have tion, a bell crank lever ing a discharge, a valve on the plate for coaction with the discharge, means for normally maintaining the valve in closed position, a lever pivoted to. the plate, a second plate carried bythe first plate and overlying the valve and lever, and a member extending between the plates and operatively engaged substantial endwise movement between the plates in one direction rockingthe lever to 'move the valve into open position, one of the plates havin an'opening through which the member passes to hold the member in substantially a fixed path of travel.
'3. A dispensing device comprising a plate, a spout carried by saidplate including spaced side walls, said plate having an opening in communication with the space between the side walls of the spout, a slide valve moving between said side walls, means for normally maintaining the valve member in closed position with respect to the with the lever, said member upon opening, and a member extending outwardly beyond the plate and operatively engaged withthe slide valve for moving the slide valve into open position. v
4. A dispensing device comprising a plate having a discharge opening, a slide valve on the plate for coaction with the opening, means for operatively maintaining the slide valve in closed posimeans for operatively engaging a leg of the lever with the slide valve, and' means operatively engaged with the second leg of the bell crank lever for rocking the lever in a slide valve into open position. Y
5. A dispensing device comprising a plate having a discharge opening, a slide valve on' the plate for coaction with the opening, a spring arm carried by the plate slide valve to urge the slide valve into closed posipivoted .to the plate,
direction to move the and operatively engaging the tion' and to normally maintain said slide valve in v closed position, a bell crank lever pivoted to the plate, means foroperatively engaging a leg of the bell crank lever with the slide valve, means operatively engaged with the second leg of the bell crankiever for rocking the bell crank lever in a direction to move the slide valve into open position, and a membercarried by the plate to be I contacted by the first named leg of the bell crank lever for limiting the extent of opening movement of the slide valve.
