Patented Jan. 13, 1925.
PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM WEST, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
DRINKING VESSEL.
Application filed May 12,
To all ivo/10m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM lVEsT, a citizen or' the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking Vessels, ofrwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water vessels and its primary obj ect is to provide in combination with a suitable container, means by which it may be partially or completely lled from a source of liquid under pressure over which it is supported.
My invention is of particular value for use on drinking cups to fill the same with water from a drinking fountain of the type commonly known as bubbling cups, and it is in this connection that it has been Shown in the accompanying drawings.
I desire it understood however, that without material changes in the construction o r arrangement ot its parts, the invention may be effectively applied to other vessels, suoli as bottles, buckets, water bags, etc., and that in using the word vessel in the following description and the thereunto appended claim, I include any container of suitable size and form to which my improvements are applicable.
In the drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated,
Figure l represents asectional elevation of a drinking cup to which my invention is applied;
Figure 2, a section take-n on the line 22 Figure l; and
Figure 3` a bottom view of the cup looking in the direction of the arrow 3, Figure l.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference character 5 designates a drinking cup ot the well known collapsible type, in the construction of which are included a bottom section 6, and a plurality of superimposed telescoping annuli 7 which in their extended position form the wall of the vessel.
The improvements constituting the present invention consist in providing the bottom of the vessel with a depression 8 and perforating said depression as at 9 for the iniiow of water from a source over which the @up is supported,
1922. Serial No. 560,501.
A disk shaped valve 13 loosely iitted in the depression normally covers the perforations, and it is limited in its upward movement by a headed guide pin 10 which extends through a central aperture of the depression.
The valve-seat Jformed by the depression is preferably made of sufiicient diameter to extend over the greater part of the bottomv of the vessel, and the latter may be provided with an annular foot 12 which spaces the perforated bottom and the downwardly projecting guide pin from a surface on which the vessel is supported.
In the operation of my invention, the cup is held over a drinking fountain of the bubbling cup type or other source of liquid under pressure. The water forcibly entering through the perforations in the bottom of the vessel lifts the valve to the extent of its limited upward motion, and passing around the edge of the same, rises in the vessel until it is completely illed.
lVhen the desired quantity of water has thus been obtained, the vessel is removed from the source of supply and the weight of the water in the vessel pressing the valve to its seat, closes the perforations against the outflow of the water,
Having thus described my invention, I desire it understood that variations in the form and arrangement of the parts may bc rcsorted to to adapt the device for use on drinking cups or other vessels which differ in construction from the cup shown in the drawings.
That I claim and desire Letters Patent is:
As a new article of manufacture, an open top vessel having in its bottom an inlet for water from a source above which the vessel is held, and a valve controlling the inlet and including a guide member extending through the bottom, the vessel having a base adapted to space the bottoni of the vessel from a surface upon which it is supported, sutciently to permit the valve to rest in closed position upon. the bottom.
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature.
