xxxxx UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. LONERGAN AND HENRY K. FARRELL, OF WORCESTER, MASS.-
COMBINED SALT AND PEPPER CASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,231, dated April 3, 1883.
Application filed March 1,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J. E. LONERGAN and ii. K. FARRELL, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Combined Saltand PepperGasters; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in table-casters; and it consists in providing a caster which is made of a single piece of material with two separate Ieceptacles in which may be placed different condiments.
Italso consists in providing such caster with means whereby the egress of the contents of the receptacles maybe prevented, as-will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, which illustrate our invention, Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of one of the receptacles, taken through the line a: w of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 a re detail perspective views.
A represents the caster, which is made of a single piece, and is provided with two separate and independent receptacles, B B. These receptacles may be of any shape and configuration as fancy maysuggest, and will be prefera'bly made of glass, though it is evident that they can be made of other materials which are susceptible of being molded. These receptacles are provided at their top with. caps U 0, which may be secured to the same either by screw-threads or by slots, as shown'in Fig. 1, which will embrace a projection which may be The caps C O are provided with perforations 0 when the vessels are intended to contain pulverized material-as pepper and salt-or they may be provided with suitable spouts when they are to be used for separate liquids.
In the annexed drawings we have shown one form of cut-off, which consists of a stopper, b, to which is secured a screw-threaded shank which terminates with a thumb-nut, whereby the stopper may be turned so as to come in contact with the perforated portion of the caps G O and cover the perforations and close the receptacle.
If desirable, the vessels B B maybe cast separate and then united by a band, D, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, which band may be heated so as to expand and then be placed around the vessels.
By the form of caster herein described the same vessel may be used for containing different condiments, and the same will be found a handy and useful article of table-furniture.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is-'- 1. The caster A, made of a single piece and provided with separate and identical chambers B B and stoppers O 0, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. A-caster consisting of two or more independent receptacles united to each other so as 'to form one piece of table-furniture, and provided with stoppers which are adapted to be opened or closed, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
