Description

W. J. COMPTON CONDIMENT HOLDER I Aug. 31, 1926.
Filed April lO, 1925 ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 31, 1926.
UNITED STATES i AWILBUR J. COMPTON, OF O GDEN, UTAH.
CONDIMENT HOLDER.
Application 1ed.April 10, 1925. Serial No. 22,145.
This invention contemplates the provision of a combination salt and pepper shaker including a slide valve capable of being cenveniently manipulated, so that the contents I of either condiment compartment can `be used when desired, the invention providing an article of the class in question which is simple in construction, artistic in appearance and one which can be cheaply manufactured and sold.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the' following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the
invention' residing in the construction, com` bination and arrangement of parts f as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional viewon line2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 4. of Figure 1.-
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the valve in position reverse to that shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 10 indicates a receptacle which may be constructed from any suitable material and vary in size and contour without departing from the spirit of the invention. The receptacle is preferably constructed of glass and is divided by a partition 11 into separate condi- - ment compartments 12 and 13 respectively,
and it will be noted upon inspection of Figure 1 that these compartments are adapted to be lled from 4the bottom of the receptacle through suitable openings provided therein, which openings are normally closed by removable Stoppers 14. The receptacle is closed by means of a cover 15 suitably perforated, the perforations 16 above the compartment 12 being smaller than the perforations 17 above the compartment 13. The partition 11 terminates in spaced relation to the upper edge of the receptacle to provide a space for the slide valve 18, the latter being mounted directly beneath the cover 15 to close either series of perforations 16 and.-` 17 respectively.
| It will be noted upon inspection of Figure '1 that the receptacle is formed with an in'- ternal bead or flange 19 which is spaced from the cover 15 a distance to support the valve" 18, so that this valve will nicely fit between the flange and cover in the manner illustrated. As hereinabove stated, the valve 18 is adapted to be shifted to occupy a position at either side ot the partition 11, so that the contents of either compartment can be used, and the supply from the other compartment cut olf.
For this purpose, I preferably employ a lever 20 which is fulcrumed upon a transverse shaft 21 arranged within the receptacle, the upper end of the lever being pivJ otally connected to the valve 18 as at 23. The lower end of this lever is connected with one end of a spring 24, the other end of which is connected with the receptacle, the spring being utilized to normally hold the valve 18 in the position shown in Figure 1. The lever 20 is also connected with the inner end of a push rod 25, the outer end of which is provided with a knob or thumb engaging portion 26 which operates in a suitable depression 27 formed in one side of the receptacle 10, the thumb engaging portion normally lying substantially flush with the outer surface of the receptacle. When the valve 18 occupies the position shown in Figure 1, the contents of the condiment compartment can be used without any danger of the contents escaping from the compartment 12. However, when it is desired to use the contents of the compartment 12, it is only necessary to push inwardly on the thumb engaging member 26, thereby reversing the position of the lever 20, which causes the valve 1 8 to shift to the position shown in Figure v5, thereby'uncovering the perforations 16 in the cover and closing the perforations 17 thereof.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advando not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the lscope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, I claim :l
A condiment holder, comprising a receptacle divided into separate compartments,
a cover having a group of perforations for each compartment, an inwardly directed flange formed o n the receptacle irrunediately close the `valve having an opening, a p1n extended across said opening, a vertically disposed lever arranged within one compartment-and pivoted at a point between its ends, the upper end of said lever bein bifurcated and receiving said pin, a coile spring Tterminally connected to the receptacle and the other end of said lever, a pocket formed in .the
receptacle and projectin inwardly therefrom and having a centra opening, a pushrod slidable thru said openmg and having a slot and pin connection with said lever atan appropriate point in its length and a head carried by said'rod and operating in isall pocket as and for the purpose speci- In testimony whereofv I ailix my signature.
