C. LOWRY.
comamzn SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV- 4, IQIQ.

CASSANDRA LOWBY, 01' CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Fee. 17, 1920.
Application filed November 4, 1819. Serial No. 885,858.
To all whom it may concern:
1 Be it known that I, CASSANDRA Lowm', residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois;have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Salt and Pepper Shakers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to. condiment holders and has for its object the provision of a device which is adapted to hold and keep separate, salt and pepper, the device being provided with a movable to-p whereby the operator may control the device so that either salt or pepper may be shaken out at will.
An important object is the Provision of a condiment holder of this character which has the appearance of an ordinary salt or pepper shaker and which has a relatively stationary top provided with two sets of holes communicating with the salt and pepper compartments of the device, a movable cover member being provided and having perforations adapted to register selectively with the perforations in the relatively stationary to An additional ob ect is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efiicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in Which igure 1 is a side elevation of the device, Fig. 2 is a plan View, Fig. 3'is a similar view showing the movable top moved,
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view, Fig. 5 is a similar view taken at right an les to Fig. 4, and
ig. 6 is a detail view showing the slotted cap.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the body of the device which may be formed of glass, crockery, or other suitable material and which has the shape and appearance of an ordinary salt or pe per shaker. At its upper end the body 10 is externally threaded, as shown. The interior of the body 10 is divided by a partition 11 into two compartments 12 and 13, the former of which is ada ted to contain salt and the latter of whic is adapted to contain pepper. This partition 11 extends above the top of the body 10 and has its projecting extremity 14 reduced, as shown.
Disposed upon and forming a closure for the top of the body 10 is a cap 15 which is provided with a transverse slot 16 and which is also provided with two sets of perforations 17 and 18, the former of which communicates with the salt compartment and the latter of which with the pepper compartment. The reduced projection 14 on the partition 11 engages within a slot 16 for preventing rotary movement of the ca The cap is provided at its lower edge wit a flan e 19 and is held in position upon the bod y a ring 20 having an inwardly exten ing flange 21 engaging the flange 19 and threade ly engaged upon the threaded upper end of the body 10. Extending longitudinally within the slot 16 is a pin 22.
Disposed upon the top of the cap 15 is a plate 23 of the same size and shape as the cap and provided with two sets 24 and 25 of perforations adapted to be brought into registration with the sets 17 and 18 of perforations in the cap at will. At one edge the plate 23 is provided with a finger engaging lug 26 whereby it may be moved. Extending from the under side of the plate 23 are apertured lugs 27 slidable upon the pin 22 and interposed between one lug 27 and the adjacent end of the slot 16, is a coil spring 28 which normally holds the plates 23 at one limit of its movement, that is with the perforations 24 registering with the perforations 17 When the device is constructed and assembled as above described, it will, be seen that normally when the device is shaken salt will be discharged therefrom owing to the fact that the erforations 24 and 17 are in registration. hen the user desires to get pepper instead of salt it is merely necessary that he press upon the lug 26 whereupon the plate 23 will move upon the cap so that the perforations 25 will register with the perforations 18. When pressure upon the lug 26 is relieved the plate will return to normal position.
.While I have shown and described the not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A condiment holder comprising a hollow body having a threaded upper end, a partition within said body dividing the interior thereof into separate compartments, the upper end of said partition projecting above the top of said body, a ca seating upon the top of said body and aving a diametrical'slot engaged upon the projecting end of said partition, the to of said cap being provided with two sets 0 perforations communicatin with said compartments, a plate slida le diametrically upon said cap and provided with two sets of perforations adapted to be brought selectively into registration with said first named perforations, means for holding said plate normally at one limit of its movement, and guide lugs carried by said plate and riding within said slot.
2. A condiment holder comprising a hollow body having a threaded u or end, a partition within said body divi mg the interior thereof into separate compartments, the upper end of said partition projecting above the top of said body, a cap seated upon the top of said body and havmg a diametrical slot engaged upon the projecting end of said partition, the top of said capbeing provided with two sets of perforations communicatin with said compartment, a plate slidable diametrically .upon said cap and provided with two sets of perforations adapted to be brou ht selectively into registration with said first named perforations, means for holding said plate normally at one limit of its movement, and guide lu s carried by said plate and riding within sai slot, and a pin extendin longitudinall within said slot, said lugs eing apertured and slidable upon said pin.
- In testimony whereof I afiix in Si nature. 45
