H. Maves, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Application August 24, 1946, Serial No. 692,8t3 In Canada June 1946 1 Claim. (01. 222-1423} This invention relates to improvements in combination salt and pepper shakers.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved combination salt and pepper shaker having a unitary body formed with separate salt and pepper compartments, and an aperturcd slidable closure member adapted to be positioned to overlie either compartment to dispense the condiments contained therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved combination salt and pepper shaker formed with a transversely extending slide track for reciprocably receiving apertured or perforated slide valves, together with resilient means for tensioning and holding said slide valve in one extreme position of adjustment.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved combination salt and pepper shaker formed with a separable valve mechanism disposed in the upper end thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved combination salt and pepper shaker which will be highly efficient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of combination salt and pepper shaker;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;

Figure 5 is a plan view of the removable cap valve guide;
Figure 6 is a side elevation, partly broken away and in section of the removable screw cap valve guide;
Figure 7 is a plan view of the resilient perforated slide valve plate;
Figure 8 is a side elevation of the resilient perforated slide valve plate;
Figure 9 is a plan view of a modified form of combination salt and pepper shaker;
Figure 10 is a sectional view taken on the line Ill-l0 of Figure 9;
Figure 11 is a sectional view taken on the line Hll of Figure 10;
Figure 12 is a plan view of the salt and pepper shaker with the valve pushed to its opposite position from that shown in Figure 9;
Figure 13 is a plan view of the modified form of resilient perforated slide valve plate;
Figure 14 is a side elevation of the slide valve plate shown in Figure 13, and
Figure 15 is an end view of the slide valve plate shown in Figure 13.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an improved combination salt and pepper shaker including a cylindrical body I having a vertically extending integrally formed partition 2, forming salt and pepper receiving compartments 3 and 4 respectively.
A round detachable screw cap guide member 5 is externally threaded as at 6 to be received in the internally threaded opening 1 in the upper end of the body I, and is formed with the opposed slotted ears 8 and 9 in which the slidable apertured valve plate I0 is received.
The valve plate It] is perforated at l I to permit the discharge of salt and pepper when said perforations overlie the appropriate salt and pepper compartments. A depending stop I2 is formed on one end of the valve plate In to limit its movement, while the arcuate shoulder I3 is formed adjacent the opposite end of said valve plate for engagement with the side of the guide member 5 to limit the movement of the valve plate in the opposite direction. A spring handle I4 is formed on the end of the valve plate It] and extends downwardly to engage the outer surface of the body I, to hold said valve plate perforations in position over the salt compartment 3. The end of the spring handle I4 is pressed inwardly until the perforations I l overlie the pepper compartment 4 when that condiment is desired.
The modified form of combination salt and pepper shaker illustrated in Figures 9 to 15 inclusive comprises a substantially rectangular shaped body l5 being outwardly tapered and formed with I the integral partition [6 separating the interior of the body I5 into salt and pepper compartments I1 and I8, respectively.
The opposite sides of the body l5 are directed inwardly as at l9 and 20 to form guides for the slidable perforated valve plate Zl. The opposite ends of the body i5 are also opened or notched -to permit the valve plate 2| to slide on the top surfaces of the upper ends of said body, with the outwardly extending guide flanges 22 and 23 on the valve plate 2| in contact with the portions I9 and 20 of the body [5. A spring 24 is secured to the outer end of the valve plate 2| to normally hold the perforations 25 in the valve plate 2| in position directly over the salt compartment ll. By pushing in on the spring handle 24, the perforations may be positioned to overlie the pepper compartment 18.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 8 inclusive, the spring handle I4 will be turned upwardly to engage the nut 26 on the body I, while the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 9 to 15 inclusive, the turned up end of the spring handle 24 will seat under the knob 21.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that there has been provided a highly improved form of combination salt and pepper shaker which will be highly efficient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that itis not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention. -fI-Iaving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A combination salt and pepper shaker comprising a container having a closed end and an opposing open end, a vertical partition centrally disposed in said container and defining a pair of vertical compartments therein, a detachable guideway on said open end and having a central opening aligned with the open end, a valve plate slidably disposed in a rectilinear path in I the guideway and closing ofi the open end of the container, resilient anchoring means connected to said valve plate for resiliently urging the same to a first position, said valve plate including a transversely disposed perforate outlet section and an adjacent imperforate closure section, means carried by the valve plate for limiting the reciprocatory movement of the plate whereby either of the sections thereof is selectively aligned with one of the compartments, said means including an arcuate shoulder formed on said plate and a depending stop member carried by one end of said plate, said shoulder and member being longitudinally spaced on the plate.
