Be it known that I, SAMUEL HnlvicsoN,"

a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Condiment Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to condiment holders of the type which are adapted to contain different condiments such as salt and pepper and which are provided with means for selectively sifting or dispensing the condiments therefrom.

The present invention has particular reference to an improved top construct-ion therefor and the particular means for detachably associating the top with the body of the condiment holder. I

()ne of the outstanding objects of the present invention is to provide an improved top construction for double condiment holders in which the sifter covering plate and the closure plate have slidable connection with the receptacle body at right angles to each other whereby the cover plate in addition to selectively obstructing one of the sets of sifter openings or completely covering both acts as a means for retaining the slfter plate in associated relation with the receptacle.

The invention furthermore comprehends a sifter top construction for double condiment holders which is extremely simple 1n its construction and mode of operatlon, which is inexpensive to manufacture and which is highly efficient in its purpose.

With the above recited and other objects in view, reference is had to the followmg specification and drawings in whlch there 1s exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention which is in no way intended as a limitation upon the scope of the appended claims as it is to be clearly understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of said claims may be resorted to when found expedient.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a condiment holder constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating the cover or obstructing plate adjusted to a position for uncovering one set of sifter openings.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference 10 designates generally a receptacle body which is vertically subdivided transversely by a central wall 11 to define a pair of

parallel compartments

12 and 13 provided with open upper ends. The upper end of the receptacle body is rovided with a continuous outer marginal ead 14 at the ends and sides thereof. A sifter cover plate 15 is provided which is formed with sets of sifter openings 16 and 17 and inturned depending end flanges 18 adapted to coact with the beads 14 at the end of the receptacle body to establish a lateral or transverse slidable connection with the receptacle so as to position the sifter openings 16 and 17 respectively over the open ends of the

compartments

12 and 13 which contain the condiments of difierent kinds such as salt and pepper. In order to provide means for I completely covering both sets of sifter openings 16 and 17 or for selectively covering one set and exposin the other and to further afford means or retaining the sifter plate 15 in place, a covering plate 19 is employed which is. formed with depending inturned flanges 20 at its side edges for coacting engagement with the beads 14 at the opposite sides of the receptacle whereby to afford a longitudinally slidable connection with the receptacle.

In use and operation of the device when it is desired to remove the sifter plate 15 for filling the

12 and 13 the cover plate 19 is entirely removed by longitudi nally sliding the same to disengage the flanges 20 from the beaded sides thereby permitting the lateral or transverse sliding and complete removal of the sifter plate 15, After the compartments are filled the sifter plate 15 is attached by transversely sliding the same into place and then reasso ciating the cover plate 19. When it is desired to sift or dispense the contents of the compartment 13 the cover plate 19 is shifted longitudinally to uncover the sifter openings 17 while obstructing the sifter open ings 16. To sift or dispense the contents of the opposite compartment the cover plate 19 is shifted to an opposite position. When it is desired to entirely close both sets of sitter openings the cover plate is shifted to a position to obstruct both sets of openmgs as illustrated in Fig. 2.

I claim:

1, A top construction for condiment holders which include a subdivided body having a pair of parallel open ended compartments adapted to contain different condiments, said body having end and side heads at the open end, a sitter plate having a pair of sets of sifter openings registering wlth the open end of the compartments, and downturned end flanges on said sifter plate engaging the end beads to constitute a laterally slidable connection with the body, and a cover plate having downturned side flanges engagcable over the side beads to constitute a longitudinally slidable connection with'the body, said cover plate constituting means for respectively obstructing either or both sets of slfter openings and for retaining the sifter plate in place.

2. A condiment holder comprising a subdivided receptacle body defining a pair of open ended parallel compartments adapted to contain difl'erent kinds of condiments, a sifter plate adapted for arrangement over the open ends of the compartments and having sets of sitter openings registering respectively with said compartments, a laterally slidable connection between the sitter plate and body, and an obstructing cover plate having longitudinally slidable connection with the receptacle body for respectivetherefor comprising a. Sifter plate and a.

cover plate each having a slidable connection with the body, said slidable connections being in the same plane and at a ri 1: angle to each other whereby the cover p ate serves to maintain the sifter plate connected with the body.

4. In a condiment holder which includes a receptacle body having a pair of parallel open ended compartments adapted to contain different condiments, a sifter plate having laterally slidable detachable connection with the body and a-oover late hav. ing longitudinally slidable detac able connection with the body whereby to retain the sitter plate in place and whereby to consti tute an adjustable means for respectively obstructing the sifter openings registering with the several compartments and for completely covering the same.
