IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-FILES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,671, dated December 5, 1871.

To all whoin it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN A. SHANNON, of Perrysburg, in the county of WVood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Paper-File and Binder; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of refer ence marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the file of a publication bound with my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the file open ready to receive a number, with the upper half of the last-filed number torn away to show the tape.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

The nature of this invention relates to an improved and simplified construction of a cheap and reliable file for publications, which, when filled, may be used to bind a volume. The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement and the method of operating the device, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawing, A represents a wooden an glerod, made of a square rod rabbeted out to form in cross-section two limbs of a right angle, a a, as shown. To the former are secured several upward-proj ectin g metallic pins, 1), and to the latter is hinged a wooden strip, A, by hinges c at the edge. If a volume is to be bound in the file the book-board covers 0 should be tacked to the inner edges of the limb to and strip A. D are rubber webbing or other elastic rings or bands, one of which is secured to each end of the filerod A to hold the strip A closed down when brought over its ends, as shown in Fig. l, and

the pins 12 should be long enough to project into openings or sockets (1 made in the inner face of the strip to receive them.

To prevent the papers from being torn 011' or away from the pins a continuous tape or cord, E, should be used in filing in the following manner: Open the tile as shown in Fig. 2; then open the paper to be filed and press it down so that the pins will protrude upward through the right half of the center margin; then, from the upper end, press the tape on the pins, letting the tape hang below the bottom of the page; then bring down the other half of the paper; another paper may now be filed in the same manner, bringing the tape up through the middle on the pins, as before; and so on until the volume is completed, when it maybe bound by turning over and clinchiug the pointed ends of the pins. If a cord be used instead of a tape, itmay be passedin the fold back of the pins. This is the proper method of filing and binding a volume when all the numbers are furnished at once; but for filing current publications the file-rod should be turned end for end from the position shown in Fig. 2, and the numbers filed sem'atim thereon, when they will read book-wise in the order of their publication.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The construction and arrangement of the angle-rod A having the strip A hinged thereto, and provided with the pins 11, the elastic bands D, and the cord or tape E, with or without the covers 0, as and for the purpose set forth.
