To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SARA KINsonLLA, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Straight- Back Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in corsets for women and is particularly designed for stout women.

The purpose of the invention is to design and construct a corset which will better accommodate the surplus flesh of stout women and especially to prevent the flesh from overhanging the top edge of the back of the corset when in position upon the wearer, and yet present a smooth, uniform and neat appearance upon the outside; further to provide a corset for the purposes designated which will be cooler and more comfortable to wear, allowing more freedom ofmotion and expansion of the breast, shoulders and shoulder blades and further to provide a fea ture which may be easily incorporated in the commercial types of straight back corsets; and finally to provide a simple and improved form of construction whereby a corset is produced having the desired lines for a straight back corset and one which will not push up as common with ordinary corsets.

With these and other objects in view the invention resides and consists in the con struction and novel combination and ar rangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departure from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings A represents the corset as a whole, 13 a front steel carrying the loops forming a part of the clasp and C a co-acting front steel carrying the studs of the clasp. D is a lacing which is threaded through eyes G of the stick L located adjacent to the front steel G and through similar eyes E in the vertical edge portion 13 of the front of the body of the corset.

H represents the fabric sections of the body of the corset which may be shaped or patterned in the usual or any preferred manner and vertically stitched together. I represents the stays of which there may be any desired number and arranged according to the out and pattern of the corset desired.

As shown these stays for the most part as will be noted in this particular design of corset do not run to the bottom edge leaving that more flexible as is the custom with the numerous styles of low cut corsets.

The feature of the invention is clearly shown in the three figures and as will be noted includes the employment of a strap J that is attached to the inside of the back of the corset in line with the waist line, said strap being only secured at its end. portions KK and there stitched into a vertical seam adjacent to the stays I. The length of the strap employed is slightly less than the width of that part of the corset lying directly back of it and between the two attached ends of the strap so as to insure a fullness of the corset back of the strap thereby producing a comparatively straight back corset the strap of which closely fits the figure at the waist line and below.

Additional waist bands M and N are employed and extend from the attached ends of the strap across and downward through the front of the corset, being stitched thereto and made an integral part of the body of the corset so as to lend additional strength and endurance to the corset around the waist and to furnish better support to the abdomen from the back.

Havlng thus described my invention What I claim and deslre to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. {In a corset of the class described,-the

combination with a body portion, of a strap arranged upon the inside of the back at the Waist line and having its two ends secured to the inside Walls of the corset atdistant points and its intermediate portion free.

2. In a corset of the class described, the combination with a body portion, of a strap arranged upon-the inside and on the Waist line having its two ends secured to the inside walls'ofthe corset and its intermediate portion free, said strap being of a shorter length SARA KINSCELLA.
