Description
UNITEID STATEs DANIEL FITZGERALD,
0E NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAST-METAL DESKS.
Specioation forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,504, dated December 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL FITZGERALD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new article of manufacture, consisting of a Cast-Metal Desk; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying' dra-win g which forms part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section.
To enable others to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe the same.
As a metallic desk my invention may be made in any of the forms in which desksrare now made by preparing the necessary patterns and proceeding as usual in other articles made of cast metal. By properly ornamrenting the patterns the most elaborate designs may be produced of fancy fret- Work, scrolls, and gures in relief, and various carvings, all without any additional expense of casting. I prefer to make the desks in sections, thereby making them easy of transportation for long or short distances, as in shipping them, or in moving from one locality to another in the same place or city.
In the drawing annexed I have shown a desk Whe-rein the whole, being comprised of four principal parts or sections, gives a very simple construction, admitting of being easily taken apart or put together. A B are upright sections, and, respectively, form parts of the case or closet above, and below make the legs. C is the top,
and has a rim, g, cast on the under side, which sets down over and embraces the upper ends of the sections A B, holding them together at the top; and the bottom f, cast on the back section B, extends to the front, and is fastened thereto by a bolt or key, k, passed through said bottom and thro ugh an un dcrl ap pin g projection, h, cast on the front part A; this single bolt, therefore, holds the sections together. The door D is pivoted at i, and when opened and let down rests on the shelving portion of the front part A. A slight change in the form of this portion, as indicated by the inclined dotted lines, will adapt the same to the purpose oi' a Writing-table. The top C has a rim, H, cast on the upper side to adapt such top to receive books or other articles. L represents a mirror hung in suitable standards.
In the construction of cast-metal desks I do not contine myselfl to special forms or construction and the desk I have described may be varied materially, while the invention remains substantially unchanged-as, for example, the bottom j may be cast on the front section instead of the back; or, by removing the back section and duplicating the front one, a double desk may be made; and other means may be used to lock the parts together, &c.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cast-metal desk as a new article of manufacture, substantially as described.
