SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,265, dated January 2, 1900.

Be it known that I, HARRY W. BoLnNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port "Washington, in the county of Ozaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Footstools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention has for its object to simplify and cheapen the manufacture of footstools; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequentb claimed.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a partlysectional end view of a footstool embodying my improvements, this view being indicated by dotted lines 1 l in the succeeding figure; Fig. 2, a plan view of the stool, partly broken and in horizontal section; and Fig. 3, a sectional view of a fragment of said footstool, this view being indicated by dotted line 3 3 in the preceding figure.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates metal corner-legs, and B metal end and side rails in union with the legs to form a footstool-base. Each leg is provided with an upper inwardly-extending flange I), having a notched lug extension 0, the latter being central of said flange. The extremities of each leg-flange are on planes at a right angle to each other, and parallel to these flange extremities are horizontal ribs (Z upon the inside of each leg, the latter being also shown provided with an upper outwardlyextending notched lug e in line with the notched inner lug c aforesaid; but as both of these lugs are for the same purpose and merely auxiliary one to another either of them may be omitted, if found desirable in practice, preference being given to the retention of the inner one.

The rails B are made olfset at their ends to have flush-joint union with the legs A between the flanges and ribs d of same. Bolts f extend through registering apertures in the matched legs and rails, and nuts g are run on the bolts to maintain the union of said legs Serial No. '73 2,478. (No model.)

and rails. If found desirable, rivets may take the place of the bolts and nuts for maintaining union of the aforesaid legs and rails.

The above-described base has the advantage of being a knockdown structure, and thus I provide for economical storage and transportation.

A Wood top 0 rests on the base formed by the union of the metal legs and rails above specified, and screws h, engaging notched lugs of said legs, are run into said wood top to hold the same in place. The top-holding screws are shown engaged with the notched inner lugs c of the legs; but they may be engaged with the other notched lugs c of said legs, or such screws may be utilized in conjunction with all of said lugs, at the option of the stool-maker.

The wood top of the stool may be upholstered or not, according to the demands of the trade, and the stool-base legs and rails may be ornamental castings of an indefinite variety of design; but while I have shown and described an all-metal base I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as it may be desirable in some instances to substitute other material for parts of said base.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A footstool-base consisting of legs provided at their upper ends with inwardly-extending flanges as well as horizontal lugs, the latter being apertured for the engagement of topsecuring devices, ribs on the legs parallel to the extremities of said flanges, rails having offset ends fitting between the leg-flanges and ribs, and means for maintaining the union of said legs and rails.
