Description

ALBERT D. JUDD.
Match Box.
Patented Dec.12,1871.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT D. JUDD, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,788, dated December 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT D. JUDD, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut; have invented a new Improvement in Match-Boxes 5 and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and eX- act description ofthe same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specication and represents in Figure 1, a side View; Fig. 2, a vertical central section on line .fr w; and in Fig. 3 an underside view.
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of receptacles for matches and for other purposes, from cast metal; the object being to cast the receptacle ot' ornamental shape and secure the parts together by a device so simple as to add little or nothing to the cost of manufacture; and it consists in casting the body or base ot' the body in two parts, with a tenon to extend through or into the base ot' dovetail form, and so that when inserted into the base-plate and a wedge or key driven between the two parts of the base all are secured together'.
The receptacle here represented is in the form of a vase, in two parts, A B, dividing through the center, the division extending through the base A Bf, forming at the lower extremity two tenons, a b. C, the base-plate or pan, as here represented, is constructed with a perforation through the bottom corresponding to the two tenons, these tenons being of dovetail form so that they may be passed separately through the opening in the bottom, as denoted in broken lines, Fig. 2. When thus inserted the two parts are brought together and a key or wedge, d, driven between them prevents the parts from spreading, and securely holds them in position, as seen in Fig. 2.
By this construction the parts are cast ot' the form desired, and are thus secured together with no other labor than that oi' inserting the wedge; hence the article may be produced at a slight advance in cost over the expense ot' casting.
In describing this invention as a match-receptacle i wish to be understood as embracing vases or articles ot' like character, i'or whatever purpose used.
I claim as my inventionrlhe herein described match-box, consisting of the divided base A B', secured to the baseplate C by a tenon of dovetail form on one or both ot' the said parts, combined with a key or wedge, d, in the manner substantially as described.
