UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. CUSHING, OF TIDIOUTE, PENNSYLVANIA.
STOP-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,283, dated August 17, 1880.
Application filed January 20, 1880.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. GUsHING, of Tidioute, Warren county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stop-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improvement, taken through the line w x, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the key. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the improvement. Figs. 4 and 6 show modications of the improvement; and Figs. 5 and 7 show modifications of the key.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish stop-cocks so constructed that the plugs can be readily fastened and released.
The invention consists in combining with the box a plug having an annular groove, a slotted wedge-key, and a lug, as hereinafter described.
A represents the box of the stop-cock, and B the plug. Around the projecting forward end of the plug B is formed a neck, either by grooving the said end or by inserting a screw in the said end.
Upon the end of the plug B is placed a slotted wedge-key, C, which rests Aagainst the bottom of the box A. The key (l may be kept from dropping outwhen loosened by making the end of its slot narrower than the neck of the plug B, or by any other convenient means, and may be kept from turning upon the box A by a lug or other stop, D, formed upon or 35 attached to the said box.
If desired the wedge-key C may be driven through a slot in the forward end of the plug B, and kept from dropping out, when driven back or loosened, bya small screw inserted in 4o a screw-hole formed in the forward end of the said key, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 4 and 5; or the wedge-key C may be made in U form, and inserted between the upper end of the plug B, and lugs formed upon the upper 4 5 sides of the box B, as shown in the dotted lines in Figs. 6 and 7.
With this construction the wedge-key C can be readily driven back to allow the plug B to be started out and turned, and can be readily 5o driven forward to fasten the plug B in place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the box A, of the 55 plug B, having annular groove, the slotted wedge-key C, and lug D, as shown and described.
GHAS. H. CUSHING.
