APPLICATION FILED OCT. 7| 19l6- Patented Jan. 30, 1917.
LMQUW CHHRLES W WEN Hemr: narnn r enri TUG GGNNECTION FOR HARNESS.
LETSJBWW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 36, 191?! Application filed October 7, 1916. Serial No. 124,384.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. REIN- HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forest Lake, in the county of Washington and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tug Connections for Harness, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved tug connection for harness and has for its primary object to provide means for connecting the tug to the belly'band, whereby the tug will be more effectively held in connection with the shaft and relative movement of the tug and shaft reduced to a minimum.
It is a further general object of my invention to improve and simplify devices of the above character, increase their utility and serviceability in practical use and enable the connection of the parts to the shaft pole to be easily and quickly efiected.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating my improved tug and belly-band connection;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of a belly-band with my improved tug connection applied to one end thereof.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the harness tug which may be of the usual form and construction and is provided upon one end with a buckle 6, whereby the tug is connected to the saddle strap. The belly-band 7 may likewise be of any approved construction, said band being provided upon each end with a short strap 8 having a terminal buckle 9.
The present invention consists of a single leather strap 10, one end of which is provided with an elliptical-shaped widened portion 11, in which the opening 12 is cut to provide the opposed relatively narrow strips 13 merging into the body of the strap 10. The strap body 10 is provided with a plurality of spaced perforations 14: for connection with the tongue of the buckle 9. The end 11 of the strap 10 is turned or bent upon itself and the inner edges of the opposed portions 13 of the loop thus formed in the end of the strap, are securely stitched to the inner wall of the tug loop 5, said tug extending through the opening 12. The terminal of the strap end 11 extends beneath the bottom of the tug loop 5 and may also be stitched to the tug, if desired. The central portions of the spaced parts 13 of the looped strap end 11 are disposed at the upper side of the tug loop and overlie the shaft S. These parts of the connecting strap 10 project laterally from opposite sides of the tug loop, and when said strap is tightened to the end of the belly-band 7, the tug loop is held by reason of the bearing engagement of these spaced portions 13, upon the upper side of the shaft S, against lateral tilting or longitudinal shifting movement on said shaft. Thus an effective connection is made between the tug loop and belly-band and also between the belly-band and the shaft. The device, while exceedingly simple, is highly effective and reliable in practical use.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and several advantages of the invention can be clearly and fully understood. The looped end of the strap 10 may, of course, be made of any desired width and may obviously be otherwise connected to the shaft tug, than as above explained. No alteration is necessary in the ordinary shaft tug or belly-band and, as the device consists of but a single leather strap, the same may be readily made and applied by a harnessmaker, at nominal expense.
While I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several features of the device, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of considerable modification therein and I therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention, as claimed.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is The combination with a shaft tug and belly-band, of a connection between the same consisting of a single leather strap, having an elongated elliptical shaped end portion provided with an opening therein, said end portion of the strap being adapted to be bent upon itself and the tug loop disposed through said opening, said strap at the edge of the opening being permanently secured to 7 the tug loop and the spaced portions of the In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my strap projecting laterally in opposite direcsignature in the presence of two witnesses. tions from the edges of the tug 100p for 1 i y )7 bearing engagement upon the shaft, and (HARLIJS IML'IN HAhr' means for detachably connecting the other Witnesses: end of the strap to one end of the belly- O.
