To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, So; Gonna, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion tanada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bobbin-Winder Guards, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of same.

This invention relates to bobbin winder guards for use in connection with sewing machines particularly adapted for factory installation where a number of machines are operated in proximity one to the other. In these cases it is usual to locate the bobbin winder and the spool carrier upon the sewing machine table, the bobbin winder, of course being so positioned that it may be actuated from the belt of the sewing machine, and to receive a thread from the spool holder, the withdrawal of. the thread from the spool being controlled by a tension de vice upon the spool holder. In some cases the thread is drawn from an overhead spool,

. passingaround the tension device usually carried by the spool carrier, to the bobbin winder. It will, therefore, be seen that under ordinary conditions the thread between the tension device and the bobbin winder, being but slightly raised from the table, is

liable to be caught by an adjacent operators material and thus broken, or the windlng otherwise interfered with and it is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide means whereby the thread mentioned will be protected from damage while at the same time being readily accessible, such means being preferably used in combination with a guard associated with the rear end of the sewing machine as heretofore known.

in carrying this invention into effect I prefer to provide an elongated guard or canopy which when in position extends around the outer sides and top of the bobbin winder and spool holder, the rear end of the said guard preferably being closed, and the forward end open or only partially closed as hereinafter explained. This guard is hingedly secured to the machine table in such manner that it may be readily brought into or out of its operative position, and where a guard is provided for the rear end of the sewing machine, such as a belt guard, means may be provided to lock the two guards together under normal conditions. An orificeis provided in the upper part of the bobbin winder guard to allow, of the introduction of thread to the tension device, carried by the spool holder, the said orifice also forming a guide for the thread; all of which is more particularly described and ascertained in and by the following specification, having reference to the accompanying drawing in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of a rear end of a sewing'inachine with bobbin winding attachments,"illustrating the application of this invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail per spective view of the bobbin winder guard.

Similar characters of reference indicate similar parts in both figures of the drawing.

1 is the sewing machine mounted upon the table 2 and provided with a bobbin winding attachment 3 together with a spool carrier 4, the said bobbin winding attachment and spool carrier also being mounted upon the said table 2.

5 is a belt guard extending around the rear end of the sewing machine, the said belt guard being of any construction and only intended to concern this invention inasmuch as its combination with the bobbin winder guard may be effected.

The bobbin winder guard preferably comprises a side member 6 and an upper member 7 which members extend throughout the overall length of the bobbin. winder and spool carrier, as located upon the table, and may be closed at the rear end by a member 8. The forward end of the guard may be left completely open or may be partially closed by a member 9 to provide an additional protection, in such manner that it will not interfere with the access of the operator to the bobbin winder and spool holder. This guard is secured to the table b hinges 11 and 12 whereby it may be readily brought into or out of operative position, and where the belt guard 5 is used, the fastening 13 is provided to secure the guards in their relative operative position, but where the guard 5 is not provided, fastening means may be used either in connection with the table or with certain parts of the sewing machine, if desirable.

14c is an orifice in the upper member 7 of the bobbin winder guard and has for its purpose to admit of the introduction of thread from above to the tension device 15 usually carried by the spool carrier 4, the said orifice also forming a positive guide for the thread to the said tension device;

It will be seen that by the use of bobbin winder guards as explained, a great saving of time and thread will be effected owing to the prevention of contact with the said thread by materials or other articles being moved around upon the machine table, and also, where the bobbin winder guard is used in combination with a belt guard, the complete inclosing o1 mechanisms is obtained whereby great freedom from damage either to machines, persons or materials is insured and the simple locking together of the two guards by means of the fastening 13 prevents the accidental disturbance of either of said guards. Also, in the case where thread from an overhead source is used, the orifice 1a insures the said thread entering the tension device 15 at the correct angle irrespective of the position of the source of thread supplied.

The cut away or open forward end of the guard, admits of access to the winder mechanism and thread as explained.

lhis invention may be developed within the scope of the following claim without departing from the essential features thereof and it is desired that the specification and claim be read as being merely illustrative and not in a limiting sense, except as necessitated by the prior art.

hat I claim as my invention is In combination with a hinged sewing machine belt guard, a supplementary guard -for other mechanisms, said supplementary guard being hingedly positioned at an edge approxil iately at right angles to the hinged edge of said belt guard, and means for nermally locking said supplementary guard to said belt guard whereby both guards are held against disturbance.
