Description

E. O. SIVOKO N. SEWING MACHINE HEAD GUARD.
APPLICATION HLED NOV. 13. 1917.
W Rm Y 9 0K. E .MZ/N 2 M i T a m u M T M n A 0 m .m .w l a P ELLIA O. SIVOKON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SEWING-MACHIN E HEAD-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1919.
Application filed November 13, 1917. Serial No. 201,734.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLIA O. Srvoxon, a citizen of Russia, resident of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Head- Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sewing machine guards and particularly to those applied at the heads thereof.
The principal object is to provide a guard to cover certain movable parts, thereby preventing entanglement of the same with material or the fingers of the operator.
A further object is to provide such guards in the form of an attachment, which may be readily applied without change in the construction of the sewing machine head.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmental perspective view showing a conventional type of sewing machine head and indicating the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective detail of the guard, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmental perspective view of a portion of the same, and
Fig. 4: is a sectional View taken on line 4 -4 of Fig. 1 showing a conventional type of sewing machine head.
In the drawings the sewing machine arm 10 is formed with the head 11, which is provided with the usual thread tensioning devices 12 and 13, the thread 15, passing through an eye in the take-up arm 16, which extends through an open slot 17 in the head of the machine.
The presser-foot bar 18, moves reciprocatively through the top of the head, as is usual and to cover these movable elements so as to avoid contact is the object of the invention.
For this purpose a strip of material is formed with an arm 20, having a foot 21, through which is an opening 22, adapted to receive a screw 23, by means of which the guard is held rigidly engaged with the face of the machine head.
Resting upon the upper side of the head is a horizontal element 25, formed with the arm 20, and having extending vertically upward the loop side 26 joined by the cross bar 27, to a similar side element 28, both being positioned in the vertical plane of the presser foot bar 18, which moves as usual between them without making contact with the cross bar 27.
Engaged with the lower end of the loop side 28, is a horizontal extension 29, the same being in a plane with the element 25, and has a curved member 30, having oppositely disposed lateral lugs 31, near its end 32, which is adapted to enter in an opening 33 formed in the head near its junction with the arm 10, in such manner that the lugs 31 rest upon the exterior of the head, while the tongue 32 extends into the opening 33 so as to guide the same laterally.
Secured by a hinge 3 1 to the element 29, is a laterally extending curved spring arm 35, the same being in register with the takeup arm 16, the lower end 37 of the curved guard arm entering the lower end of the slot 17, in which the take-up bar operates, and engages therewith in such manner as to hold the entire guard rigid.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the hands are prevented from comlng in accidental contact either with the take-up arm or the presser foot bar, as well as any material on which the machine may operate.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sewing machine head guard comprising a U shaped loop positioned on the head of the machine over the end of the presser foot bar, an arcuately curved strip hinged to said loop extending to the front of the head of the machine to cover the take-up arm thereof and means for securing said guard in position upon the head of the ends of said arm directly engageable a machine. withan opening formedin the head of the 10' 2. A sewing machine guard having a'bent machine and means for securing said stri strip for preventing contact with the to the head of the machine. resser-foot bar, a curved arm hinged there- In testimony whereof I have 'afiixed my to extending toward the front downward signature. over the head of the machine, preventing. contact with the take-up, means formed at ELLIA O. SIVOKON.
