WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED IAN- 4. I916.
Patented. Jan. 16, 1917.

i wer To all whomz't w'tay'co'rwcm:
Be it knownthat 1, JOHN W. Toonnr, .a citizen of't'he United States, residing at Berlin, in the county of Coos-and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, .of which the followin is a specification. This invention relates .to' wrenches and more particularly to an attachment therefor. in An objectof the invention is to provide an attachment in the nature of atwoarm spring so constructed as to jbfe easily, quickly and securely -positionedi'fon. the handle of any ordinary wrench of the Stillson type,
to-engage with thepi'voted jaw carrying carriage to retain the same normally-in proper longitudinal position with relation to the handle.
A further object of the invention is to so provide a spring for the frame member of a wrench which includes a body portion or strip having two angularly arranged arms or leaves, said body being bendable whereby the same may be folded around the handle of different sizes of wrenches and secured to said handle to retain the arms or leaves in proper frame engaging position.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wrench showing my improved attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the attachment removed from the wrench; and Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation illustrating the space between the opposed ends of the body portion of the spring for permitting the insertion of a pointed tool.
In carrying out my invention it is my object to provide an improved form of attachment for wrenches, and for the purpose of illustration I have shown the same as applied to wrenches of the Stillson type, embodying a handle 5 provided at its upper end with a fixed toothed jaw 6, the inner side of the jaw being reduced as at 7. Extending transversely through the reduced portion 7 of the fixed jaw is a pivot member in the form of a bolt 10 and adapted to pivotally connect the frame 11 to said handle. 5&1 The frame 11 carries a slidably adjustable Specification of Letters Patent;

jaw 12 comprising a shank portion 13 which extends ,7 through the frame and longitudiinally of the-handle 5 of the wrench and is adjustably mounted in the frame 11 by means of the usual adjusting nut 14:. The frame is formed with a carriage 15 for receiving the handle portion 5 of the wrench. In order that the pivoted jaw carrying carriage may be retained normally in proper longitudinal position with relation to the handle, I provide an attachment 16 comprising a,;single piece of resilient material- 17 formed withan elongated body portion 18 having a straight edge 19 and a beveled edge 90. Formed integral with the body portion 18 at points adjacent the opposite terminal portions 21 thereof is a pair of diametrically opposed stout leaf springs or arms 22 and 23. The attachment 16 as a whole constitutes a spring of the flat leaf spring type and in the application of the attachment to the wrench the body portion 18 thereof is constructed of bendable material whereby the same may be folded around the handle 5 of different sized wrenches and loosely secured thereto against accidental longitudinal movements by means of a pair of angularly disposed pins 9A and 25, said pins having protruding projections 26 and 27 which engage with the respective longitudinal edges 19 and 20, of the body portion 18, as will be readily seen by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawing. The said pins position the spring arms 22 and 23 of the attachment at opposite sides of the edge faces of the handle 5 and longitudinally thereof and in proper frame engaging position, whereby the pivoted frame will be normally retained in proper longitudinal relation with relation to the handle. As illustrated, the opposed terminals 21 of the body portion 18 of the attachment 16, are disposed in spaced parallel longitudinal relation one to the other when the spring is attached to the wrench defining a longitudinal slot 28 to permit of the insertion of a sharp pointed tool in the form of a screw driver and the like, not shown, whereby the body portion may be elevated over the extensions of the pin 26 to enable the removal of the same from the handle should parts thereof become broken.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those-skilled in the art to which the .invention relates, andwhile I have described within the scope of the claims appended thereto.
I claim:
1. In combination with a wrench, a frame pivoted thereto carrying a slidably adjusted jaw, of a spring constructed of an integral piece of material and embodying a body portion bent around the handle portion of the Wrench, said strip being formed with a pair of diametrically opposed arms extending longitudinaly of and at the opposite edge faces of the handle portion and positioned within said frame for normally retaining the slidable jaw-in proper longitudinal position with relation to the handle.
7 e 2. In combination with a wrench,
having a handle portion provided with angularly disposed pins, a frame pivotally connected 'with said handle portion and carrying a slidably adjusted jaw, of a spring constructed of an integral piece of material and embodying a body portion bent around the handle portion of the wrench and confined between said pins for preventing any accidental movement thereof, said body portion being formed with a pair of diametrically opposed arms extending longitudinally of and at the opposite edge faces of the handle portion and positioned within the frame for normally retaining the slidable jaw in proper longitudinal position with relation to the handle.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
