UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. FRANCIS D. KELLOGG AND GEORGE N. IVES, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COVERED BUCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 121,288, dated November 28, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANcrs D. KELLOGG and GrJJORGrEl N. IVES, of New Haven, in. the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Covered Bucket; and we do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specication, and represents, in-
Figure l, a side view; Fig. 2, the same turned one-fourth around; Fig. 3, a top view; and in Fig. 4, a section in line a: x of Fig. 3.
This invention relates to an. improvement in buckets such as are commonly used for transporting oysters, commonly termed oyster-tubs,
but applicable `to other purposes, the object of the invention being to secure the cover and render it air-tight; and it consists, first, in the arrangement of an India-rubber band at the top of the bucket, between the hoop and the bucket, at the upper edge, and projecting slightly above, so that the said rubber forms a packing between the cover and the bucket. Second, in the arrangement of a bar across the ytop of the cover, constructed with cams upon its ends which engage with the ears upon the bucket, so that when turned in one direction the cams press onto the bucket, and in the opposite direction free the cover so that it may be removed.
A is the bucket, of any known construction, provided with a hoop, B, at the top. Between the hoop and surface of the bucket a channel is formed by cutting a rabbet into the wood. Onto this rabbet a band of India rubber, a, or similar material, is arranged before placing the hoop thereon; then the hoop placed over the packing onto the bucket secures the packing in place, leaving it projecting slightly above the upper edge of the bucket, as seen in Fig. 4. C is the cover, constructed to set onto the packing, as seen in the several figures. Centrally across this cover is arranged a shaft, D, one end of which passes through a Xed ear, E, on the bucket, and the other through a hinged ear, F, on the opposite side, and at the points of the shaft where it comes in contact with these ears it is made of cam shape, as seen in Fig. 4, there -represented as bearing in the ears E F to force the cover hard down upon the packing. From the shaft D an arm, H, extends out over a staple, I, by the insertion of a lock, into which the cover is secured.
To release the cover, turn the arm H over to the opposite side, as denoted in broken lines, Figs. 2 and 3, which inverts the shaft so that the hinged ear F may be turned down therefrom, freeing the cover so that it may be removed.
, By this construction the cover is not only pressed hard down upon the packing, but secured in position.
To the shaft, or at other convenient point, a handle, L, is arranged for convenience of moving the bucket.
We claim as our invention- 1. The packing a of India rubber or other material arranged in a rabbet around the upper edge of the bucket, upon the outer surface, and secured in place by the hoop B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The shaft D, constructed with cams at its ends and arranged across the top of the bucket, combined with ears E F fixed to the bucket, and operating inv the manner substantially as described.
