CUFF-BUTTON.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. ORPIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff- Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cuff buttons and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character including a rigid or integral stud, and it is an object of the invention to provide a button of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same after being applied to a cuff or the like serves to effectively maintain the same in fastened relation.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement 0f the several parts of my improved button whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my'invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a cuff button constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a coacting cuff being indicated in section; Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of a cuff button constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and unapplied; and Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view of the device as disclosed in Fig. 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 11 denote a pair of converging shanks having their outer longitudinal margins rounded and connected at a predetermined point intermediate their lengths by the integral or rigid stud 2, the intermediate portionof said stud 2 being provided with the forwardly directed portion .3 substantially V-shaped in form with its apex outermost and with the side walls of said extended portion substantially parallel with the opposed inner margins of the shanks 1, whereby the open-ended slots 4 are produced Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J an 16, 1917 Application filed June 28, 1916. Serial No. 106,419.
within the button-hole, my improved cuff button will be effectively maintained in ap-.
plied position and serve to maintain the cuff or the like in a desired connected or fastened relation. It is also to be noted that the free end portions of the lips or tongues 5 are rounded in order to facilitate their insertion through a button hole with a minimum injury to the cuff or other article of wearing apparel with which the improved button may be employed. I
In applying my improved button, the end portion of the shanks provided with the inwardly directed lip or tongue 5 are first inserted through the button-hole from the inner side of the cuff after which the portion of the cuff in advance of the buttonhole is seated within the slot 4 whereupon the tongue or lip 5 is then directed through the button-hole. It is to be noted that the lips or tongues 5 are disposed in the same plane occupied by the shanks 1 as is also the interposed stud or shank 2 and its forwardly extended portion 3. It is also to he noted that the slots 4 are of such a length as to bring the outer or converging extremities of the shanks 1 substantially flush with the edges of the cuff, as is thought to be clearly shown in Fig. 1, whereby the cuff is thoroughly protected against curling.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a cuff button constructed in accordance with myinvention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, exce'pt as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
In combination with a cuff provided with button-holes, a cuff button adapted to be disposed through said button-holes and comprising a pair of converging shanks adapted to overlie the outer faces of the cuff, a stud interposed between said shanks at a predetermined point intermediate their lengths and provided with a substantially V-shaped extension disposed toward the converging ends of the shanks, the side walls of the ex tension being substantially parallel with the opposed walls of the shanks and affording open-ended slots, said slots being of such a length as to cause the outer edges of the cuff to be substantially flush with the converging ends of the shanks, and inwardly and rearwardly directed tongues carried by the shanks adjacent the rear ends thereof and having their free extremities rounded, the rear edges of the tongues at their junction with the shanks and the inner ends of the slots being spaced apart a distance equal to the length of the button-holes of the cuff,
said stud, extension and tongues occupying I the same plane as the shanks.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. JAMES H. ORPIN. Witnesses VVILBUR A. SooT'r, LEO F. FARRELL.
