EUGENE T. PEARL, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN cRuTcHEs'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,254, dated'November 28, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE T. PEARL, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Imof which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the making of crutches so as to give a certain amount of elasticity to the head of the crutch and have it yield to the weight upon its head.
Figure l is a perspective view of the head of a crutch according to my invention. Fig. 2 is an upright sectional view of saine.
A is the head or piece ofthe crutch which the arm rests on 5 B B, rubber springs between the hea-d A and the side pieces; C C, side pieces which terminate in one at the bottom, not shown 5 D D, ferrules at the top of springs B B, which are secured to the head A by a screw which passes through their center, and with an indentation in them which rests on the upper end of springs B B; E E, lower sockets, which are fastened onto side pieces C C by means of a screw, K, in their center an d a screw on the sides. These sockets have recesses in their tops, into which rest springs B B, and a projection across between the side pieces O C which connect them together, and through the inside of these sockets are oblong oriiices through which pass rods F F, and which serve as keepers for same; VvF F, rods which are screwed into head A and pass down through orifices in sockets E E and through oblong oriccs in keepers G G. On the lower ends of these rods F F there is a head, A, which prevents them from passing through the orifices G G, and which holds the head A of the crutch in position. G G are keepers with oblong orifices, through which pass rods F F. These orifices are made oblong so that the rods F F may either of them be de pressed without binding'. H II are enlargements of the ends of rods F F to hold the head of the crutch A down onto the springs B B 5 I I, screws which hold ferrules D D to the head A; K K, screws which hold the sockets E E onto the side pieces C C; L, an elastic strap, which is fastened to the two sides of the head A to pass over the shoulder to hold the crutch from falling down or over when the arm is not pressing on it.
The operation of this crutch is that as Weight is pressed on the headA the springs B yield and make it work easy, and as the weight is pressed either forward or backward either rod F will settle down, and the oblong orifices in E and Gpermit it without binding.
I claim as my inventionl. A crutch, when constructed with head A, springs B B, side pieces O O, ferrules D D, sockets E E, rods F F, and keepers G G, substantially as described.
2. Grutch-head A, spring B, side pieces C, rods F, keepers G with oblong oriiices, and strap L, substantially as described. ,n Y,
EUGENEv T. PEARL.A
