ALFRED E. STRINGER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CLOSET-BOWL AND COVER MOUNT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. id, 1917.
Application filed November 22 1913. Serial No. 802,343.
1 '0 all whom it 7/7 (/3 concern.
Be it known that l, .Xnrnnn E. Srmnonn, a citizen ot the l 'nited States, and a resident of the city of Chicago. county of Cook, and State oi 'l'llinois, have invented certain new and useful linproven'ients in Closet-Bowl and Cover lllounts; and I. do hereby declare that the. following is a full, Iclear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
As lmretol ore constructed, wall attached toilet closet bowls have been ditlicult to install, and the installation has not proved reliable. In most constructions the bowl is supported upon the wall or marble slab allording the wall of the closet or partly thereon, and the soil pipe which is connected with a horn on the bowl, is frequent so connected as to exert stress on the bowl. with the resultot breaking the same. Furthermore, in such constructions heretofore, the utmost nicety and exactness of fit ting is rerprired to enable the connection to he made between the soil pipe and the bowl at all. and any stress as applied to the bowl is communicated more or less directly to the joint between the same and the soil pipe, with the effect of soon producing a leak. In most constructions, the seat cover has been mounted upon the bowl so that whether open or closed. it becomes more or less difiicult to properly clean the bowl, due to the projection the various attaching means for the cover.
3v my invention a mounting is provided for the bowl and cover therefor, such that toe. same are. retained against the wall, and suitable supporting means is provided. to relieve the soil pipe of stress thereon.
it is an object of this invention to provide a mounting for closet bowls wherein the soil pipe and the bowl are each supported a; inst the. wall to maintain the same in without stress existing therebetween, and such attaching means also serving to atlord a support for the seat and cover for the bowl without imposing the weight oi the bowl on the wall.
t is an object of this invention to provide a device wherein .a soil pipe and closet bowl are supported in register with one another, with an adjustable packing gland engaging therearound to maintain a always seal therebetween, and with ustable spacing elements between the bowl and the support therefor to relieve the wall of stress.
Itisplso an object of this invention to provide a mount adapted to support a closet bowl and soil pipe in register with one another, the, attaching means for which ail'ord a hinged support for a and cover for said bowl whereby the wall or like is en tirely relieved of the weight of the bowl.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a device wherein the attaching means for the bowl and soil pipe altord a hinged support for the seat and cover of the bowl, said attaching means being capable of adjustment to insure a. finished appearance and a complete inclosure of the adjusting members when said seat and cover are attached in proper position.
It is furthermore an object or" this invention to provide an adjustable hinged mounting for the seat and cover ot a closet bowl whereby the attaching bolts for said closet bowl to the wall may be utilized in supporting the seat and cover in proper position above said bowl.
It is finally an object of this invention to provide a device consisting oi few parts and of simple construction acapted to properly support a closet bowl and the seat and cover therefor in proper relation upon. a wall, and without exerting stress upon the soil pipe to which the same is connected.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings, and hereinafter more fully deserihed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a central vertical section of closet bowl, showing the same attached to a wall by means embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig.
1. F'g. 3 is a section "taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. i is a section taken on line 4- i of Fig. 1. 5 is a section taken on line 55 of Fig. 4.
As shown in the drawings: the reference numeral 1, indicates a closet howl having an attaching plate 2, integral therewith, and adapted to abut against a Wall 3, for supporting the closet bowl thereon. A soil pipe 4:, is shown projecting through an aperture in said Wall 3, and registering with the soil extension 5, of the closet bowl. The attaching plate 2, of the closet bowl, is substantially of triangular outline, and is adapted to 6055pthe outer surface of said crate with a triangular spider 6, the feet 7, of which are apertured to register with apertures in said iittaching plate 2, to permit the insertion therethrough of attachin bolts, although, of course, the particular shape of the spider or attaching plate is immaterial. A split clamping ring (i forms a part of said spider and is adapted to engage around and support the soil pipe 4i. One bolt 8, is adapted to thread into one of said spider feet 7 and the plate is tightened thereon by means of a nut 9, and a larger ornamental nut 10, inclosing the same, and bearing upon plate 2, although the latter nut is not essential.
For the purpose of maintaining a seal be tween the soil pipe 5, of the closet bowl, a packing ring or gasket 11, is provided surrounding the junction of the two pipe extensions, and a sliding compression ring 12, surrounds said soil pipe 4 and is impelled against said packing 11, by a thrust ring 13, which is adapted to be drawn toward said junction of said pipe by means of adjusting bolts 14 and nuts 14, the latter upon being tightened acting to draw up the respective bolts. A packing ring 15, is also provided between said compression ring 12, and said thrust ring 13, in order to insure a seal between the cooperating elements of the gland. An adjustable supporting leg 16, has threaded engagement with a lug 16*, on the lower leg of the spider 6, so that by turning the same the spider may be thrust upwardly to entirely relieve the wall of the weight of the bowl and accessories.
The upper portion of the bowl is supported by means of bolts 17, engaging through said attaching plate 2, the wall 3, and the upper feet 7 of the spider 6. In order'to relieve the wall 3, which is usually a marble slab, of any stress whatsoever, complementally threaded spacing nuts denoted respectively as 17*, and 17, are provided, the nut 17", being slidably mounted on the bolts 8 and 17, respectively, so that by adjusting the respective nuts 17% and 17*, the support- 'ing stress from the attaching plate 2, is transmitted through the spacing nuts directly to the spider elements 7. Said bolts 17, are each provided with an enlarged ornamental head 18, which is apertured and internally threaded as shown clearly in Fig-J), to receive therein hinge studs or pintles 19, which due to the threaded engagement thereof are adjustable therein. A locking screw 20, having a spherical head conforming to the contour of the head 18, is threaded into the inner end of each of said hinge pintles 19.
It may be readily seen from Fig. 5, that the pintle studs 19, may be each independently adjusted relative the respective bolt heads 18, and locked in such adjusted posiadjacent thereto,
larged portion of said stud shaft- 1S a seat 1, and the soil extension tion by means of the screw, the elements in all positions aiiording a finished appearance to the assembled device.
As shown in Fig. 5, said pintles 19, are shown in an extreme inner position, the same being adjustable outwardly by loosening the screw 20, to thus provide a hinge connection wherein in the'mounting of said bolts 17, the distance is greater than that shown in the drawings.
J ournaled on the narrowed inwardly projecting ends of said pintle studs is a hinge member 21, adapted to be connected upon the seat for the closet bowl. Immediately and upon the slightly encover hinge member or leaf 22, which is, of
course, independently operatable with respect to said hinge portion 21. Thus the bolts 17, not only serve to aliord a hinge connection for the seat and cover of the closet bowl, but also cooperate, inasmuch as they extend through the attaching plate 2, of said bowl, and thread into the upwardly directed feet 7, of the spider 6, to assist in supporting the closet bowl upon the wall. A cover 23, may be attached to the hinge members or leaf .22, in any suitable manner, and serves to close over the seat 2A, attached to the hinge member 21, as is usual in such constructions.
'The operation is as follows. WVhen it is desired to mount the closet bowl upon the wall, the wall is apertured at a plurality of points corresponding to the position of the apertures in spider (i, and the closet bowl is then positioncd with the apertures in the attaching plate 2. in register with said wal]. apertures, and the respective bolts 8, 14, and 17, are inserted thcrcthrough. ()1? course, the packing gland element must have been previously inserted over the soil pipe 4, and after the bowl is properly mounted the gland is tight ened from the front face of the attaching plate 2. by drawing up the bolts 11, which project thcrcthrough. It is evident that particular conditions may determine the distance between the upper feet 7, of the spider, that is to say the same lmay vary, and, of course, a. bowl. must be provided with apertures adapted to register therewith, but the hinged connection which is atlordcd by the enlarged head of the upper attaching bolts, is adjustable to compensate for the variation in distance between the same, as already described and clearly shown in l igs. 'hand I am aware that various details ol? construction may be varied through a 'wide range without departing troni the principles of this invention. 1 therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted other isr than necessitated by the prior art.
