7 Claims.
My present invention relates to plumbing devices, and more particularly to an improved seat attachment for defecators and the like.
My invention is designed primarily for use in 5 connection with a bracket type of defecator, such as is disclosed and claimed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 749,069, filed Oct. 19, 1934, but is adapted for use in connection with the usual and ordinary type of defecator, and may be 10 substituted for a seat attachment of any existing type of defecator.
In carrying out my invention, I utilize the means for associating the defecator seat and defecator cover with a defecator attached to a 15 wall or other supporting element. The functions above referred to are performed by the same means but such means are independently adjustable with respect to each other.
The principal object of my invention therefore,
20 is an improved seat attachment for defecators and the like.
Another object of my invention is a combined defecator securing means and seat attachment means.
Another object of my invention is an improved seat attachment means for defecators and the like, wherein an adjustment is provided for adjusting the position of the associated seat and cover relative to the defecator.
Other objects and novel features of the construction and arrangement of parts comprising my device will appear as the description of the invention progresses.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing my device in position with respect to a defecator and supporting wall and illustrating the means for supporting the defecator seat and cover.
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line 2-2 40 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a portion of my device showing the defecator supporting nut and pivot means for the defecator seat and cover in axial alignment with, but separated from each 45 other.
Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation on line 44 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 5 is a plan view partly in section showing a modified form of my invention.
Referring to the drawings;
I designates a section of a wall forming one of the enclosing elements of a bathroom and comprising, essentially the wall II proper, cement facing I2 and tiling I3. I4 designates a wall or 55 bracket type of defecator having formed integraltherewith a lower vertical plate or apron I and an upper vertical plate or apron I6 provided with perforations through which pass the means for securely mounting the defecator I4 to the wall ID. The fastening means which pass through the vertical wall I5 do not concern my present inventions and therefore will not be described in detail.
The wall Ill, in the rear of the vertical apron I6, is drilled or otherwise perforated, as indicated by reference numeral H, to allow passage therethrough of bolts I8. Preferably two of such bolts are provided and the heads I9 of such bolts are multi-sided, while the ends of such bolts which extend outward from the wall I0 through perforations 20 in the vertical wall I6 of the defecator I4, are threaded as indicated by the reference numeral 2 I. Lying adjacent to the face of the wall I0, remote from the tiling I3, are spaced channel members 22, and such channel members may consist merely of vertical risers, as shown in the drawings, or may be provided with a portion extending at right angles thereto and extending under, preferably, the floor of the bathroom, such extending portion being rigidly secured to said floor. Such construction enables me to use a relatively light form of wall I0, as the defecator I4 is then substantially supported on the channel member 22. Such a construction, however, is not essential and does not affect my present invention. The channel members 22 are perforated as shown in Fig. 2 to allow passage of the bolts I 8, and such perforations are elongated as shown in Fig. 1 to allow relative movement of the bolts I8 longitudinally of the channel members 22, and also to enable me to house the multi-sided heads of such bolts I8 thereof by the member 23.
screwing onto the threaded end 2| of the bolts I8 is a nut 24, provided at its forward end with a cylindrical recessed chamber 25, and provided at its rear end with a plurality of faces which permit the nut 24 to be screwed onto the threaded end 2| of the bolts I8 by means of the usual wrench. v
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be noted that when the defecator I4 is placed in position against the tiled surface of the wall I 0, and with the threaded ends of the bolts I8 protruding through perforations 20, that a washer 21 is placed between the nut and the finished face of the vertical wall I6 of the defecator. Nut 24 is then screwed onto the bolt I8 until the defecator I4 is firmly positioned on the wall I0. Because of the elongated cause of the clearance between the bolts I8 and the perforation 20 in the vertical wall I6, it is obvious that a considerable lateral and vertical movement of the defecator I4 is permitted in order that the same may be properly positioned on the wall It).
Under the conditions of assembly as set out above, it is noted on reference to Fig. 2 that the threaded end 2| of the bolts 48 extend outward beyond the limits of the cylindrical portion of the nut 24 and on such extending portion is adapted to be screwed the cylindrical members 29, said members 29 being, of course, internally threaded to cooperate with the threads 2l. The diameter of the cylindrical members 29 is such that same is capable of sliding engagement into the cylindrical chamber 25 of the nut 24. The forward or outer ends of the cylindrical members 29 have formed integrally therewith the substantially rectangular and flat sided bearing member 3i), such bearing member being provided with a transverse passage 3l, extending therethrough. The passages 3| in the bearing members 30 are brought into alignment with each other, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and when thus aligned are adapted to receive a shaft 32, such shaft being threaded at each end.
33 designates a defecator cover provided with an integral rearward extension 34 which in turn is provided with a transverse passage in which is mounted, a metallic bearing sleeve 35 having an internal diameter slightly greater than the external diameter of the shaft 32. The width of the rearward extension 34 is slightly less than the distance between adjacent faces of the bearing members 30, on the cylindrical members 29 above referred to.
With such construction it is obvious that the defecator seat 33 may be mounted on the shaft 32 and rotation thereof is permitted about such shaft as a center. 36 designates the seat cover provided at its rear-end with spaced and rear wardly extending lugs 31. The distance between the lugs 31 is slightly more than the distance between the opposite outer faces of the bearing members 30. Such lugs 31 are provided with aligned perforations, in each of. which is securely fastened a metallic bearing sleeve 38. Such bearing sleeves 38 have an inner diameter slightly greater than the outer diameter of. shaft 32, and such shaft 32, as will be noted upon inspection of Fig. 2, has the threaded ends thereof extending laterally outward beyond the lugs 31. It is obvious therefore from the above construction, that the seat cover 36 is permitted a rotary movement about the shaft 32 as a center. screwing onto the threaded ends of the shaft 32 are cap nuts 38, there being washer 39 interposed between the cap nuts 38 and the outer faces of lugs 31.
On the seat cover 36, between the adjacent faces of the bearing members 30, is formed an integral rearward extension 4| which forms a finish for the seat cover 36. Also in conjunction with :the lugs 31 of recess 42, such extension 4| acts as a stop to limit the upward and rearward rotary movement of the seat cover 36. Preferably the depth of the recesses 42 is so proportioned as to prevent the seat cover 36 from rotating rearwardly far enough to strike against the tiling I3 on the wall If).
As ordinarily the defecator l4, and the vertical wall members l5 and I6 are formed of vitrous material and integral with each other and therefore it is impracticable from a commercial point of view to manufacture the same exactly to size,
and because of the mechanical difficulty of. building an accurately faced wall In, it is necessary to provide not only adjustment in the setting of the defecator M on the wall it], as above described, but also to provide means for adjusting the seat 33 and seat cover 36 with respect to the defecator l4. Such adjustment is provided by means of the cylindrical members 29 above described, and is obtained by threading the cylindrical members 29 further in or out of the respective cylindrical chambers 25. It is obvious that I am thus enabled to vary the relative position, within reasonable limits, of the seat 33 and seat cover 36 on the defecator 14.
Referring now to Fig. 5, wherein is shown a modification of my invention, I have arranged clamping nuts 43 for clamping the defecator I4 onto the wall H3 by means of the bolts l8, with a multi-sided portion and forwardly extending cylindrical section 44. Associated with such nuts 43 are the bearing members 45, the rearward ends of which are provided with cylindrical recesses 46 for enclosing and permitting longitudinal movement thereof with respect to the cylindrical portions 44 of the nuts 43.
On the forward end of each of the members 45 are bearing members 47. Associated with each of the bearing members 47 and extending laterally therethrough are bearing shafts 48, provided at each end with a threaded portion and passage to receive the cap nuts 49. In this modification of my invention the seat 55 has formed integral therewith and at the rear end thereof, bearing lugs or ears 5|, such lugs or ears 5| being spaced apart from each other and adapted to have passed through perforations therein the shaft 48. The seat cover 52 has formed integral therewith and at the rear end thereof, lugs or cars 53 spaced apart from each other and provided with perforations through which may pass the shaft 48. In this form of my modification, the lugs 53 of the seat cover 52 are so formed as to provide a stop portion 54. Such portion 54 striking against the top of the bearing members 41 will limit the rearward pivotal move of the seat cover 52 about the shaft 48.
Preferably the seat 33 or the seat 59 is adapted to be enclosed by the special form of seat cover 36 or 52 respectively, but as such seat and cover form no part of my present invention they have not been described in detail. For a full disclosure of the details of construction of such a seat and seat cover, reference is had to my co-pending application Serial No. 25,365 filed June 7, 1935.
While I have necessarily shown and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, somewhat in detail, it is to be understood that I may vary the size, shape and arrangement of parts comprising my improved structure within relatively wide limits without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In combination with a defecator bowl and a seat and cover therefor, of means for securing the defecator bowl in position with respect to a vertical support, and for adjustably mounting said seat and cover on the top of the defecator bowl, said means including a pair of threaded bolts and a pair of threaded members recessed at one end, for securing the defecator bowl on the vertical support, and with the threaded bolts extending forwardly and horizontally outward from the vertical support and arranged above and parallel to upper surface of the defecator bowl, and bearing members for the seat and cover movable lon- 'gitudinally of the threaded bolts independently of the threaded members, said bearing members having their ends housing within the adjacent ends of the threaded members.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination of a defecator bowl adapted for mounting on a wall and having an upwardly extending flange at the rear thereof with a horizontal aperture therein, a bolt extending through the wall and having its threaded end extending through the horizontal aperture of the flange, a threaded member screwing onto the extending threaded end of the bolt for securing the defecator bowl in position on the wall, said threaded end of the bolt extending outwardly from the end of the threaded member remote from the wall, a recess formed in the end of the threaded member remote from the wall, a member housing in said recess and screwing onto the extending end of the bolt, a horizontal bearing formed in said member, and a defecator seat and cover pivotally mounted in said bearing.
3. In combination with a defecator bowl and a seat and cover therefor, of means for securing the defecator bowl in position on a vertical support and for adjustably mounting said seat and cover on the top of the defecator bowl, said means including a pair of threaded bolts and a pair of threaded members cooperating to secure the defecator bowl on the vertical support and with the threaded bolts arranged substantially parallel to each other and extending forwardly and horizontally outward from the vertical support and arranged above and substantially parallel to the upper surface of the defecator bowl, and bearing means for said seat and cover movable longitudinally of the threaded bolts independently thereof and of each other, whereby adjustment of the seat and cover is provided with respect to the defecator bowl.
4. In combination with a defecator bowl and a seat and cover therefor, of means for securing said defecator bowl in position on a support and for pivotally mounting the seat and cover in position with respect to the top surface of the defecator bowl, said means including a pair of threaded bolts engaging with the supports and passing through spaced perforations in the defecator bowl structure and extending outwardly parallel to each other and parallel to, but spaced above, the top surface of the defecator bowl, threaded members screwing onto the threaded bolts and securely attaching the defecator bowl to the support, said threaded members at their outer end being recessed, and bearing members for pivotally mounting the seat and cover in position with respect to the defecator bowl, and movable longitudinally on the threaded bolts and housing partly within the recesses, said bearing means being each movable independently of the other along their respective threaded bolts whereby the seat and cover may be adjusted with respect to the top surface of the defecator bowl.
5. In combination with a defecator bowl and a seat and cover therefor, of means including a pair of threaded bolts and a pair of threaded members for securing the defecator bowl in position against a wall or other supporting structure and with the threaded bolts extending horizontally outward from the wall above and parallel to the uppersurface of the defecator bowl, a recess in the outer end of the threaded members, and bearing means for the seat and cover associated with the threaded bolts and housing partly within the recesses in the threaded members, said bearing members being movable along the respective bolts independently of each other and independently of the threaded members, whereby adjustment of the seat and cover is provided with respect to the top of the defecator bowl.
6. In combination with a defecator bowl and a seat and cover therefor, of means including a pair of threaded bolts and a pair of threaded members for securing the defecator bowl in position against a wall and with the threaded bolts extending horizontally outward from the wall above, and parallel to, the upper surface of the defecator bowl, and bearing means for the seat and cover movable longitudinally of the threaded bolts and independently of the threaded means.
'7. In a combined mounting for a defecator bowl and a seat and cover therefor, the combination of a headed and threaded bolt adapted to, have its threaded portion extend through perforations in a wall and in the defecator bowl structure, an internally threaded member screwing onto the threaded end of the bolt and holding the defecator bowl in set position on a wall or other support, a recess formed in said internally threaded member of the end remote from the wall, a member internally threaded at one end and provided at its other end with a horizontal bearing adapted to pivotally receive a defecator seat and cover, said member adapted to be moved longitudinally of the threaded end of the bolt to adjust the seat and cover relatively to the top of the defecator bowl.
