WITNESSES I. M. FREDERICK.
TOY SWING.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 1, 19l6.
Patented Jan. 9, 1 917.
INVENTOR TOY SWING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. e, 1917.
Application filed June 1, 1916. Serial No. 101,020.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAA'o a citizen of the United States, residing at Perkasie, in the county of Bucks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Toy Swing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a toy swing composed of a beam, swings proper suspended therefrom, a shaft carrying said beam, a cord or equivalent adapted to be wound on said shaft, a weight on said cord, said weight being adapted to run down and so cause rotation of said shaft, and means for stopping said beam at intervals thereby imparting intermittent motions thereto, and a guide for said cord, the several members forming together an inexpensive and interesting toy or amusement.
t consists also of details of construction as will be hereinafter set forth.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, as long as they are included in the scope of the claims.
The figur represents a perspective view of a toy swing embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a base in which is stepped the lower end of the rotatable shaft 2, which rises vertically from said base and has its upper portion mounted freely in the eye 3, which is formed with or secured to the horizontally-extend ing cross bar 4, said shaft being adapted to rotate in said eye while its lower end isrotate 'On the base 1, said shaft adapted to thus being held in its vertical positions at opposite places by said base and eye, and so guided and steadied in its motions.
Depending bar are the vertically-extending rods or sides 5 which are extended downwardly in angular form as at 6, and have'their lower ends secured to the base 1, the members 6,5, and 4 forming a light but; sufficiently strong frame preferably of wire which rises from the base 1 and'is supported thereon, the angular portions 6 of said base admitting the latter to be made of less width than said frame, while, however, properly sustaining the latter without liability of overturning. 7 designates a cord or cord-like member which is adapted to be wound around the lower portion of the shaft 2 and continued M. FREDERICK, j
therefrom and passed over the standard 8, whose upper side has therein the depression 9, in which said cord 7 is adapted to run in opposite directions without liability to slip therefrom. The standard is of the form of a frame preferably of wire and has its side members secured to the base 1 whereby the standard is retained thereon in upright position. To the end ofthe cord 7 opposite to the end that is secured to the shaft 2 is secured the weight 10 whose tendency is to cause the unwinding of said cord, and the consequent rotation of the shaft 2. To the portion of said shaft below the eye 3 is secured the beam 11 whereby the latter receives rotation from said shaft. Freely suspended from said beam are the arms 12 of the seats 13, the latter and said arms forming together swings for dolls, or other objects. On the terminals of said beam are secured the chain-like members forming flexible hangers lt from which are suspended the weights 15, it being noticed that the hangers are parallel with the sides 5 of thewire frame referred to. The shaft 2 is extended above the eye 3 forming the handle 16 for rotating said shaft.
The operation is as follows :-The device is placed on the table or the like, and the shaft '2 rotated to wind the cord 7 thereon, thus raising the weight 10. The weight is allowed to run down whereby it rotates the shaft on reverse order, and with it the beam 11, and theswings13. This causes the weights 15 to fly out by centrifugal action and winds the flexible hangers 14% around the sides 5 of the frame, thus detaining at intervals the rotation of the beam and consequently of the swings until the hangers unwind themselves when the beam continues from the terminals of the cross j to rotate and so the beam receives intermittent motions, and .with it the swings which oscillate with the dolls or objects thereon producing together an interesting toy. When it is desired-to impart a continuous rotary motion to the beam and consequently to the swings said-beam.,has secured thereto the hooks 17 which are adapted to have the flexible hangers hung thereon, thus placing the weights 15 and said hangers out of the path of the sides of the frame so as not to wind around said sides, and not detain the swinging at intervals as in the previously occasioned instance.
Having thus described my invention what posed of a beam, a base on which the lower end of said shaft 1 therefrom, :a
adapted to'unwind the same from said shaft and cause the rotationof said shaft ,and 1tsyconnections,ta frame oncsaid base rising therefrom, the top of said frame forming a bearing for the upper end of sald shaft, a flexible hanger on sa1d beam,
[and a wei'ght'pendant from said hanger adjacent to the side of said frame, whereby said weight by centrifugal action imparted to it is adapted to cause said hanger to wind around said side as an intermittent detaining device for said beam.
2. A toy of the character stated composed of a-beam, afshaft carrying the same, a
forming a bearing saidv shaftya flexible base on which the lower end of said shaft is mounted, a swing on said. beam, a cordlike member connected with said shaft adapted to be wound on'and unwound tl'ierefrom, a weight on said .member adapted to unwind the same from said shaft and cause the rotation of said shaft and its connections, a frame on said base rising therefrom, the top of said frame 7 hanger on saidibeam, a weightpendant from said hanger' adja cent to the slole of said frame whereby said weight by centrifi'rgal action imparted to on'said base for adapted toj have the on which the lower Q -mounted, a; swing on member connected with said shaft adapted to be wound on and; unwound therefrom, a weight'gon said member adapted to unit is" adapted-to cause said hangerto wind around said side as an intermittent detaming device for saldbeam, anda guide sard cord-l ke member its opposite motions.-
3. Atoy of thecharacter stated composed of abeam,a shaft carrying the same, a base end of said shaft is said beam, at cord-like wind the "same fromsaid shaft and cause the rotation of said gsliaftgand" its connect1ons, a frame on said base 'r1s1ng'there-- from,-the top ,of said frame forming a hear.- {ing for theupper end of said shaft, a flexia V V ble hangeron said beam, a weight-pendant hanger adjacent to the' side of l ponies bi ithis bateiit may'beobtaind forl' five edema,

weight "on said. member for'the upper end of latter ride thereon in J formin a bearln said weight by said frame whereby said weight by centrif ugal action imparted to it is adapted to cause said hanger to wind around said side as an intermittent detaining device for said beam, and means on said beam adapted to hold said weight on said hanger out of the path of said side of said frame.
4. A toy of the character stated composed of a beam, a shaft carrying the same, a base on which the lower end of said shaft is mounted, a swing on said beam, a cordlike member connected with said shaft adapted to be wound on and unwound therefrom, a weight on said member adapted to unwind the same from said shaft and cause the rotation of-said shaft and its connections, a frame on said base rising therefrom, the top of said frame forming 'a bearing for the upper end of said shaft, a flexible hanger on said beam, a weight pendant from said hanger adjacent to the side of said frame whereby said weight by centrifugal action imparted to it is adapted to cause said hanger to wind around said side as an intermittent detain is mounted, a swing on said beam, a cordlike member connected with said shaft adapted to be wound on and unwound therefrom, a weight on said member adapted to unwind the same from said shaft and cause the rotation of said shaft and its connections, a frame on said base rising therefrom, the top of said frame for the upper end of saidshaft, a flexible hanger on said beam, and a weight pendant from said hanger adjacent to" the side of said frame whereby centrifugal action imparted to it is adapted to cause said hanger to wind around said side as an intermittent detaining device for said beam, said shaft being extended above said frame adapted to'form a handle for rotating the former. a VISAAC M.
