HARRY J. COLE, 0F BENNINGTON, VERMONT.
MECHANICAL TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 2%, 1918.,
Application filed October 31, 1917. Serial No. 199,443.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY J. Gone, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bennington, county of Bennington, and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates essentially to a mechanical toy in which rotary motion is imparted to a device by the force of gravity, in combination with the torsional force exerted on a suspender by the weight of the device.
The fundamental object of the invention is to provide a toy designed especially to stimulate a childs imagination, and which can be made the subject of a study to entertain persons with a mental tendency for mechanics.
The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of a toy embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same partly in section.
In this drawing the letter a designates a table or platform which is preferably circular and provided with a card board rim b having pictures Xrinted thereon to give a pleasing effect. series of flags c as shown or any other objects such as card board figures of clowns or manikins are mounted on the table. A pole d projects upward from opy is suspended by means of a thread f fastened to an eye 9 and a pin or nail 72 drlven into a table or any stationary article elevated from the ground.
The thread as shown is of the ordinary sewing kind consisting of three or more yarns united and lIllZBItWlSllBd-* When the thread is fastened as indicated the canopy and the table will revolve at a uniform rate of speed until the thread is entirely untwisted. In this device the time of travel is limited by the length of the thread, in actual practice a thread about two yards long will whirl a table around a central point for about three quarters of an hour.
I claim 1. A mechanical toy comprising a table, a pole secured to the center of the table, a conical canopy fixed to the top of the pole, and
a single thread secured to the central top portion of the canopy for suspending it from a stationary object.
2. A mechanical toy comprising a table, a pole secured to the center of the table, a conical canopy fixed to the top of the pole, and a single thread consisting of a number of intertwisted united yarns secured to the central top portion of the canopy for suspending it from a stationary object.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRY J. COLE.
