Description

CHARLES H..'THORNTON.
Improvement in Harness Munting-s.
Patent-ed Nov. 14,1871.

CHARLES H. THORNTON, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-MOUNTINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,022, dated November 14, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. THORNTON, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and Improved Y Harness-Mounting; and that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is in the nature of an improvement in the manufacture of turretrngs, hooks, and other harness-mountings. The invention consists in protecting the seam of the leather which covers harness-mountings with a strip or beading of metal, in the manner and for the purposes hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a side view of hook 5 Fig. 2, a section of same 5 Fig. 3, side view of turret-ring; and Fig. 4, an edge View partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
A represents a hook for the check-rein of harness. This hook may be of any desired size or shape, and is made of malleable iron, as such hooks are generally made. The hook is. then covered by leather, c, tightly stretched, bringing the seam of leather on the outside of the hook, (see Fig. 2,) where it is stitched together. The seam thus formed is protected or covered by a metallic strip or beading, b, one end of said strip being soldered to the point of the hook or that part of the lining c which covers the same, (see Fig. 1,) and is then bent over the seam and at intervals soldered to the iron of the hook, which is left exposed at points along the seam for this purpose, and in this way until the seam is entirely covered and protected by the metallic strip or beading, when the end of said strip or beading is securely soldered to the base of the hook. The lining to the hook or ring may be then afxed in the usual manner, if desired.
Harness-mountings constructed in the way above described not only present an exceedingly-ornamental appearance, but, as will be readily seen, the seam and stitching are entirely protected from the action of the weather, thus rendering them more serviceable and economical.
y I do not wish to confine myself to the application of the strip of beading, above described, to turret-rings or hooks, but it may be usefully ap plied to allv covered harness-mountings with equal facility and with like result.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Oovered harness-mountin gs, when the seam or seams thereof on the outside of the same are covered and protected by a metallic strip or beading, asa new article of manufacture.
OHAS. H. THORNTON.
