TOP LID FOR HORIZONTAL GRAND PIANOS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1916.
Application filed March 20, 1916. Serial No. 85,460.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARGHIBALD DAWES RAMSDEN, a British subject, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Top Lids for Horizontal Grand Pianos, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a plan view of a grand piano having a lid that is constructed according to the present invention; Fig. 2 is a section through the lid on the line X-Y, Fig. 1, the lock bar and vertical partition of the lids which are in front of the lines of section being shown in dotted lines.
The lid of the piano is to be divided squarely at about 1 foot 6 inches from its front or square end so as to form two portions as usual the front or square portion so separated or divided from the rear or curved portion of the lid to be again divided by right-angle cuts as shown at A B on the accompanying drawing into three portions, 1, 2, 3, the center portion 2 to be say twice the width of the two exterior portions, the division of the exterior of such portions from the center portion to be by beveled cuts preferably sloping inward on the outer portions as shown in Fig. 2 so that when in position the outer or exterior portions cannot be lifted or raised without the removal or raising of the center portion. The three portions of the front of the lid so separated or divided as above-mentioned to be attached to the back or curved portion of the lid by hinges along the line H so that such three portions of the front of the lid may be opened or folded back either together or separately on the portions of the back or rounded part of the lid to which they are respectively attached.
The advantages of this arrangement are :1. That by being able to open up three different lids on the top of the piano I am able to obtain with their aid various strengths of tone at will. 2. That it is unnecessary to fold back the whole of the half lid 1, 2, 3 of the piano to permit of the music rack being raised, the folding back of the center portion 2 being all that is necessary to enable the music rack to be elevated. 3. That the retention of the exterior portions of the front of the lid in a closed down position while the piano is in use and being played upon and while the music rack is in elevated position enables such exterior portions to be used for instance to support a candle C in a candle-stick C or a book K as shown.
If a lock be applied to the part 2 to lock it down, it will clearly have the effect of preventing the parts 1 and 3 from being lifted.
The cuts A and B if there happens to be a lock bar L forming part of the lid as shown in chain line in Fig. 2 need only be beveled where they passthrOugh the bar; above the bar they might then be either beveled or vertical.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A top lid for a horizontal grand piano with the front portion divided into a plurality of sections by beveled cuts.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ABCHIBALD DAWES RAMSDEN.
