DOLL-HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1916.
Application filed August 2, 1915. Serial No. 13,288.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, I-IELEN Es'rELLm SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have made a new and original Discovery for Doll- Heads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.
My invention relates to a doll head and more particularly to the detail construction of the head and means for attaching same to a body, the principal object of the invention being to provide an unusual and attractive head and facilitate the attaching of the head to the body of a doll.
In accomplishing this object I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure I is 'a front view of a doll provided with a head that is constructed and attached to the body in accordance with my invention. Fig. II is a longitudinal section of the doll, particularly illustrating the head construction and mounting. Fig. III is a detail perspective View of the preferred form of head, and wherein the head is formed fromOne-half of a cocoanut. Fig. IV is an end view of the same particularly illustrating the attachment of the eyes and the arrangement of a mouth member. Fig. V is a detail perspective view of the head attaching post.
Referring more in detail to the drawings: 1 designates the head body which is here shown to be comprised of one-half of a cocoanut from which the eyes 23-t have been drilled out to make them uniform in size and provide openings entirely through the shell. In order to provide eyes for the doll head I project the shank 5 of an ordinary shoe button or the like 6 through the openings 2-8 and connect the shanks within the head by wire or the like 7 so that the eyes are suitably anchored to the head body, and in order to impart a representation of a natural mouth I paste a piece of red flannel or the like 7 over the opening 4: within the head.
To provide the attachment of the head to the body portion of the doll I form a slit 9 at the rear edge of the head body, and drill a hole 10 through the body directly opposite the slit 9, so that a post 11 may be located within the slit and nest within the head body and may be secured to the body by a nail 12 that is located in the opening 10 and driven into the end of the post, and by a wire 13, which is projected through an opening 14 in the body directly back of the slit 9 and wound about the post, said post being preferably provided with a groove 15 for receiving the wire so as to preyent the wire from slipping along the pos l/Vhen the post is attached to the head, the latter is filled with cotton or other suitable material and a hood 16 attached thereto by sewing or gluing. The post is then projected into the neck opening 17 of a suitable body, and fastened to said body. The body may then be stufied about the post and clothed or decorated as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A doll head comprising a hollow body open at the rear and provided with a slit, and with an aperture opposite the slit, a post located within said slit and bearing against the body, adjacent the aperture, a fastening member projecting through said aperture into the end of the post, and means for securing said post to the slit portion of said body.
2. A doll head comprising a hollow body, open at the rear and provided with a slit at its under edge, a post located in said slit and bearing against the inner face of said body, opposite the slit, and means for securing said post to the body.
3. A doll head comprising. a hollow body, open at the rear and provided with a slit at its under edge, a post located in said slit and bearing against the inner face of said body, opposite the slit, and means for securing said post to the body, the said body having eye and mouth openings at the end opposite the post.
4:. A doll head comprising a half of a cocoanut shell, having the cocoanut eyes drilled out to form eye and mouth openings, and a post fixed to the open end of the shell and projecting from the shell to form an anchoring part for a doll body.
5. A doll head comprising a half of a cocoanut shell, having the cocoanut eyes drilled out to form eye and mouth openings, a post fixed to the open end of the shell and projecting from the shell to form an anchor- 7 Copies of this patent may be obtained for ings in its closed end, having a slit at one side of its open end, and having an aperture 15 adjacent the slit and an aperture directly opposite the slit, a post located in said slit and bearing against the opposite apertured portion of the shell at its inner end, a nail projecting through said aperture into the 20 end of the post, and Wire extended through the other aperture and Wound about the post, forthe purpose set forth.
