Abstract

A rag doll having a wig which is readily detachable by a child. The doll head and wig include complemental attachment strips which mount mating snap fittings or the like. The attachment strip for the head forms a reinforcement and connection strip between adjacent sections of the head covering to prevent tearing of the covering upon repeated removal of the wig by a child.

The doll head and wig include complemental attachment strips which mount mating snap fittings or the like. The attachment strip for the head forms a reinforcement and connection strip between adjacent sections of the head covering to prevent tearing of the covering upon repeated removal of the wig by a child.
2 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures DOLL WITH REMOVABLE WIG BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to rag dolls and particularly to a rag doll mounting a detachable wig.
2. Description of the Prior Art Floppy rag dolls having padded heads and bodies are very popular with children. To provide heightened interest it has been proposed to provide the doll with detachable hairpieces or wigs so that the child can take one type or color of wig and. replace it with another. However, padded heads of rag dolls are usually covered with a soft fabric which is relatively easily torn. Consequently, care must be taken to mount the wig in such a way that the doll head is notruined by repeated rough-and-tumble removal of the wig by a child.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to the present invention, the padded head of a rag doll is provided with an elongated tape made of heavy-duty fabric which is sewn or stitched to the outer covering of the head in such a way that the tape forms a reinforced connection between the fabric sections and also provides a mounting means for the attachment devices or the like which are used to secure the wig in position. More particularly. the outer covering of the head includes a pair of fabric sections which terminate in opposed margins extending up the sides and across the top of the doll head. These margins are turned under to define seam allowances. The edges of the tape are also turned under and are stitched to the adjacent seam allowances.
The wig includes a complemental tape made of heavy-duty fabric which is arranged in overlying relation to the tape of the head covering. These tapes are provided with complemental attachment means operative to detachably connect the tapes together. The attachment means can take various forms, but conveniently comprise a plurality of spaced apart snap fasteners whose mating portions are carried by the pair of tapes, respectively, so that a child can easily remove the wig from the doll head by simply pulling upon the wig or wig tape until the snap fastener portions snap apart. Repeated pulling upon the wig does not tear or otherwise destroy the covering of the padded head, since the tape to which the snap fasteners are connected bears the major portion of the wear and tear, and stresses upon the tape are passed to the head covering through the multiplicity of seam stitches.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent from consideration of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. I is a perspective view of the upper portion or head of a rag doll, with the hairpiece or wig being removed;
FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1, but showing the wig partially attached to the head;
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. I, and showing the wig as it appears when completely attached to the head;
FIG. 4 is a rear elcvational view of the head of FIG. I, with the wig removed, and illustrating the location and configuration of the snap fastener portions carried by the head; and j FIG. 5 is an enlarged view taken along the line 5-5 of FIG. 4. I
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT P Referring now to the drawings, there is illustrated the upper portion or head 10 of a child's rag doll. The rag doll is a common and well-known type of doll in which the body and head are formed by soft stuffing material held in place and suitably configured by an outer fabric covering. The rag doll is of somewhat flattened appearance and has a floppy character, without any or very few bumps or hard protrusions. It is common to provide such a doll with a relatively soft hairpiece or wig, such as the fabric wig 12 illustrated, or a comparable wig made of yarn or the like. As will be seen, the present invention is concerned with the provision of a wig 12 which is readily adapted to be detached from the doll head 10 at the whim of the child, but without damage to the material of the head 10.
More particularly, the head 10 includes an outer covering having a pair of double thickness fabric sections 14 and 16 made of cotton cloth or the like, and terminating in opposed margins extending up the sides and across the top of the head 10. These margins are turned under to define seam allowances l8 and 20, as best viewed in FIG. 5.
The head 10 includes an elongated tape 22 made of twill or other heavy-duty material interposed between the confronting margins of the sections 14 and 16. The tape edges are turned under and are attached to the seam allowances l8 and 20 by stitching 24. This provides a strong reinforcement and attachment for the head covering sections 14 and 16.
As best seen in FIG. 2, the wig 12 includes an elongated tape 26 made of the same material as the tape 22 and arranged in overlying relation to the tape 22. The tape 26 is securely attached by any suitable means to the wig 12.
The tapes 22 and 26 are provided with attachment means which are operative to detachably connect the tapes together so that the wig 12 can be held in position. Although various types of attachment means could be utilized on the tapes 22 and 26, such as hook and eye fasteners (not shown) or burr-type fastening material (not shown) such as that sold under the trademark Velcro, it is preferred to use a plurality of conventional snap fasteners. As is well known, the typical snap fastener includes a pair of mating portions 28 and 30 which are detachably secured together by merely pressing them against one another. In the present invention, a plurality of the fastener portions 28 are suitably affixed to the tape 22 in spaced relation along the length of the tape. The complemental fastener portions 30 are secured in similar spaced relation along the length of the wig tape 26, as best viewed in FIG. 2.
The wig 12 is mounted upon the head 10 by aligning the fastener portions 28 and 30 and pressing them together until they snap into coupled relation. Removal of the wig 12 is simply a matter of pulling on one end of the tape 26 until the fasteners snap apart, as will be apparent.
Because the head tape 22 is connected along its full length to the head covering sections I4 and 16 by the stitching 24, pulling upon the wig 12 or tape 26 does 3 4 not normally tend to rip or destroy the softer, less rugtions, said tape being interposed between said marged material of the sections 14 and 16. Consequently. gins with its edges turned under and stitched to said Ih Child is PlOVldfid With a novel (10 head and Wig eam aliowangeg 10 form an integral pan of said combination which permits repeated removal and ath d; tachment Of the without destroying the SOfteI', less 5 a f r covering said head and including an donrugged Portions of the dollgated tape made of fabric which is of said heavy- Various modifications and changes may be made with regard to the foregoing detailed description without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:

a padded head including an outer covering having a pair of fabric sections terminating in opposed marduty construction and arranged in overlying relation to said tape of said head; and
