ROBERT M. SMITH, OF BALTIMORE7 MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVENUE-STAMP PROTECTORS.
Specification forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 120,786, dated November 7, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
n following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making apart of this specilication, in Which- Figure 1 is a top view of my invention as it appears when in use on a barrel, and Fig. 3 is a detail View. Fig. 2 is a similar view as it appears when open for inspection'.
Referring to the drawing, ais a section of any part of a barrel or package containing` beer or spirits; b, a sheet-metal bframe which may be of any suitable form, tacked upon the outside of the package; c, a sheet-metal plate hinged or otherwise attached at one end to the frame b, and large enough to cover the space i-nclosed by the frame b; d is a revenue-stamp stuck on the package inside ofthe frame b,and consequently covered by the plate c when the latter is turned down. The plate c protects the stamp from defacement by exposure to the Weather, from injury bycontact with hard substances, from gnavving by animals, Ste. The frame b is provided With struckup lips e, the object of which when turned down is to fasten the plate down upon the stamp, and when turned up,as theymay readily beby bending' them, to expose the stamp to view for inspection. The lips, instead of bein g struck up from the metal frame, may be made of sheet-brass or other suitable metal, and fastened to the frame by solder, or by each being put through a slot in the frame and having its bottom edge bent under the frame. But I do not wish to confine myself to the particular means described for fastening the hinged cover, as it is obvious that other and perhaps equally effective means may be used Without departing from my invention. The plate or hinged cover may be perforated, if preferred, so as to show parts of the stamp Without raising.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The beer or spirit-package revenue-stamp protector, substantially as herein described.
