AIR-DIRECTOR FOR USE IN BURNING LIQUID FUEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1916.
Application filed October 29, 1915. Serial No. 58,678.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY PELHAM SMITH, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Air-Directors for Use in Burning Liquid Fuel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved airtrunk for use in burning liquid fuel, of the type comprising coaxial cylindrical and truncated conical portions, and equipped with means for imparting a gyratory movement to the primary air supply, so as to effect thorough admixture of the fuel particles with the air. Such an air-trunk is built into the front of a furnace and accommodates the burner which is disposed with its axis coincident with that of the trunk, the air necessary for combustion being admitted to the combustion chamber of the furnace by way of the trunk.
The object of the invention is to provide a construction of such an air-trunk which, while adapted to be readily manufactured at low cost, will be very efficient in the performance of its function.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figures 1 and 2 are a longitudinal section and end elevation respectively of the airtrunk.
Referring to the drawing, 1 denotes the portion of the air-trunk which, when the latter is built into the furnace, is located adjacent to the furnace front. The portion 1 is of cylindrical formation and isprovided at its forward end with an impeller plate 2 of a construction not new per se.
The impeller plate shown by way of example comprises two series of angularly disposed blades 2 and 2 arranged around an annulus 8, the center of which lies on the axis of the air-trunk and which serves for the reception of the burner (not shown).
The portion of the air-trunk which, when the latter is installed in the furnace front, opens into the combustion chamber is constituted by a truncated conical portion 4 coaxial with said cylindrical portion and diverging therefrom; the smaller end of the conical portion and the adjacent end of the cylindrical portion being spaced a short distance apart to afford between them a narrow peripheral gap 5, through which gap secondary air is forcibly induced to How by the current of primary air flowing through the trunk. The said portions 1 and 2 of the air-trunk are preferably connected by means of a web-plate or web-plates, such as indicated at 6 in Fig. 1.
As shown in Fig. 1 the cylindrical portion and the smaller end of the truncated conical portion spaced therefrom are of the same or substantially the same internal diameter.
It is a characteristic of the improved construction of air-trunk that the interior of the cylindrical portion is unobstructed; further, the cylindrical and conical portions are separated by a narrow peripheral gap by virtue of which gap and the locationthereof a powerful induction of secondary air is attained.
WVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is The herein described device for use in burning liquid fuel comprising, in combination, a cylindrical portion the interior of which is unobstructed, a truncated conical portion coaxial with and diverging from the end adjacent to said cylindrical portion, the boundaries of the contiguous ends of said cylindrical and conical portions being circles of equal diameter and spaced to afford a narrow peripheral gap of substantially uninterrupted annular formation, and an impeller plate comprising angularly disposed blades and secured to said cylindrical portion at the end remote from said conical portion.
In testimony whereof I havesigned my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY PELI-IAM SMITH.
