APPARATUS FOR PREPA RiNGAND FEEDING FUEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,399, dated September 4 1900.
Application filed May 2, 1900 T0 or whom it 1nrty-co niccrn. v
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. DAY, a citizen of the United. States, residingin the city of NewYork, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings andState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Preparing and Feeding Fuel; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to apparatus for preparing and feeding fuel in a finely-divided condition to furnaces; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, whereby improved results and great einciency are obtained.
My said invention relates more particularly to the construction of the pulverizing-chamber and the devices connected and combined therewith, whereby certain new results are produced.
The best form in which I have contemplated embodying my said invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and the same is disclosed in the following description and claims.
In the drawing the figure is a plan view of the apparatus or pulverizing-chamber with the upper portion removed, together with the parts connected thereto.
In said figure of drawing, A designates the casing of the pulverizing chamber. The main portion of the casing is in the form of an ellipse disposed in a horizontal position, having a part at each end removed to form plane terminations. At one end of this main body is the usual annular trough A, and at the opposite end is the breaking or grinding mechanism B. This grinding mechanism is of any preferred form and is connected with the pulverizing-chamber for the purpose of delivering the fuel to the pulverizer after it has been acted upon by the breaking or grinding mechanism.
O designates a horizontal shaft which passes centrally through the casing A and within which it is provided with fan or pulverizing blades 0. Each of these blades is attached to a shank 0 which is inserted in a socket in the main blade-arms c and secured by a setscrew 0 13y this construction the blades Serial No. 15 ,264. (No model.)
Ecan be readily adjusted radially to the desired distance from the interior of the casing, :Li1d the blades can also be adjusted angularly in respect to the shaft C or the axis of the ,pulverizer.
In the drawing the blades 0 are all shown 5218 set parallel to the shaft; but with varying conditions and kinds of-fuel it may become desirable to have one or more of the sets of blades at an angle to the shaft. Those nearest the fuel-inlet might be set so as to facilitate the forward movement of the fuel, and the blades nearest the exit might be set so as to retard such movement, whilethose located centrally remain substantially parallel to the shaft.
Within the trough A the shaft C is provided with the usual fan-blades c, as usual in this class of devices, to withdraw the powdered or pulverized fuel from the pulverizer and deliver it to the furnace.
The inner surface of the casing A is throughout its entire length provided with a network of slightly-projecting corrugations to hold and retard the unpulverized material, so as to enable the blades 0 to act more efficiently upon the same. The projecting portions of this roughened surface are raised above the main portion of the surface but a short distancefrom one-sixteenth of an inch upward, as may be found most desirable.
As the broken fuel comes from the grinder or breaker B it is acted upon by the first of the pulverizing-blades, and the centrifugal action of the same throws this material outward against the inwardly-curving surface of the pulverizing-chamber A at this end of the same. The form of the chamber tends to throw the material thus thrown against it toward the center of the pulverizer, where it is acted upon by the blades nearest the center of the chamber. The draft of air through the chamber induced by the fanblades 0 tends to draw all materials toward the discharge end of the chamber; but when such materials come in contact with the inwardly-curving Walls of the discharge end of chamber the inward curvature tends to retard and hold back the unpowdered or unpulverized portions of the fuel, which are effected by centrifugal action, so that they are kept from being discharged from the said pul- X IBIlZlDg GlIZIUIbBI until theyihave been finely.
comminutedk The form of the chain her t'en'ds' in the first place to prevent the return of the materials received from the grinder and also;
ingfichamber having thegeueral for mof an ellipse and'lprovided with ant inlet atone end and a discharge at its opposite end, of revolving 'pulVerizing -blades within said cham- 5 tends to prevent the too-free discharge of the unpulverized partsof the fuel. It Will'be understood that the proportions of the pulverizer-chamber may be changed, without departing from the-spirit of; myfim- 1o vention, so long as the principle of operation set forth is retained. For example, the said her adjustable radiallyand angularly in respect to, the axis-50f said chamber, substantialliv'as described; .1 l 3.,In an apparatus for preparing and feediingfifuelgtheacombiuation with the pulverizing-chamber of'circular form, the diameter Ofwhich changes between its inlet and'dis- 35 i5 walls at the end may be varied.
