' oonnmnn on. AND ens BURNER.
moneta- Y Applicationflled June 6:, 1918. Serial No. 238,571.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,. STUART B. Bnomn, a citizen of the United States, IGSldlIlg at ilmerding, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Oil and Gas Burners, of which the following s a specification.
This invention relates to combined oil and. gas burners, whereby either oil or gas may be employed as fuel, or both together.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an improved burner adapted to produce an intense heating flame; 0 In the accompanying drawing, the single figure is a sectional view of a combined oil embodying my improve- -when in position is adjacent to the opening 5. Within the pipe 7 is mounted an oil spindle 9, having screw threaded engagement with the member 6, and having an oil conduit 10, and an oil nozzle 11, screwed into the outer end. v
An oil regulating valve 12 is applied to the rear end of the oil spindle 9, and nuts 13, are provided for. holdlng the oil spindle 9 in its adjusted position.
It has been found that in. order to secure an intense heating flame, it is necessary to provide ample area for the flow of gas and this is accomplished by constructing the gas nozzle 8 with an annular outlet area 14, substantially equal to the The outer end of the nozzle 8 is also provided with an inwardly'extending annular lip 17, for directing the flow of gas toward the center of the opening 5, as this has the effect of properly combinlng the gas and a1r, so to produce an intimate mixture and a high burning efliciency.
The oil nozzle 11 should be positioned, so as to provide the proper gas outlet through the surrounding gas chamber, and for ,this
' opening 5.
area of the annulargas chamber 15. I
purpose the oil spindle with its nozzle can be accuratel (adjusted by simply turning the oil spin 1e after loosening the nuts 13. When the proper adjustment has been made, the nuts 13 are again tightened.
In operation, if as-alone" is to be employed as fuel, the 011 valve "12 is closed and gas flows through the'inlet 16 to the gas chamber 15.," and thence through theoutlet area 14: to the openin 5, where the gas is combined with air owing from the air Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 20, i921 .chamber 2,. aroundthe gas nozzle 8 to "the If oil alone is used as fuel, the oil valve 12 is opened, and then oil is supplied through the oil conduit 10 and theoil nozzle 11, and a combustible mixture is 'then'iormed with the air, at the opening 5.. a I It will be evident that both oil and gas can be lused together as fuel by permitting the flow of oil as well as gas.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A gas burner comprising abody memher having an air chamber, a cap member having a'discharge outlet opening communi eating with said chamber, and a gas nozzle mounted in sald a1r chamber and having an annular as outlet, the adjacent faces of the cap mem er and the gas nozzle being interconverging 'frustums of cones converging.
toward the longitudinal axis of the gas nozzle to form an annular air outlet, a sharp edge separating the annular air and gas outlets so that the air and gas outlets are in close proximity to each other and to the outlet opening in said cap member..
2. A combined oil and gas burner comprising a body memberfhaving an air chamber, a gas nozzle mounted-in said-air chamber and having an annular lgas outlet, and an oil spindle havin an. oil n'ozzle' mounted in said gas nozzle, t e adjacent faces of the cap member andthe gas nozzle being intercom verging .frustum's" of cones converging toward the longitudinal axis'of the gas nozzle to form an annular air, outlet, the gas nozzle having an annular. lip for directing the flow of gas through the gas ,outlet toward the longitudinal axis of the b'urner'and the .air, oil, and gas outlets being in close proximity to the outlet opening in the cap member.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto. set
m hand. p
