Description

NI. D. YVICH.
FACE SHIELD. APPLICAUON F|LED AUG-2.1916. 1,205,834. Patented Nov. 21,1916.
/ Zig ,2
MILICI-I D. YOVICH, OF BURNHAM, ILLINOIS.
FACE-SHIELD.
Application filed August 2, 1916.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Minion D. Yovior-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burnham, in the county of Cook, State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Face-Shields; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in face shields, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which can be readily engaged with the head of a person so as to hold the shield in front of the face to protect the same from heat.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that the shield can be readily raised or lowered, as desired.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a shield of this nature particularly designed for use by persons working in foundries, or in any place where a persons face is subjected to intense heat.
Vith these and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the device. F ig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. l is a sectional view on line i-4 of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary rear elevation. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing l indicates the band which is adapted to engage the head of a person, said band being split and having one of its ends provided with a pocket 2 vfor adjustably receiving the reduced eX- tension 3 carried by the other end of the band l, said extension being held in adjusted positions within the pocket by the thumb screw 3 which is carried by the end bearing the pocket.
Having its rear end connected to one end of the band l is an upwardly curved strap 4, the forward end of which is provided with an offset 5, said oset terminating in a iiange 6 which is secured in any suitable manner to the forward part of the band l, the purpose of which will appear later.
VSpecification of Letters Patent.
Patented ov. 21, 1916.
Serial No. 112,768.
TheV shield plate 7 is substantially circular in shape, and is curved transversely so as to more effectively guard the face from heat, said plate having mounted thereon an elongated glazed window S, so that a person wearing the device can readily see. The upper edge of the plate 7 is provided with a guide 9 which slidably engages the strap l, and when the guide is engaged with the offset 5 it is obvious that the downward movement of the plate 7 will be limited.
rlhe side edges of the plate 7 are provided with eyes l0 which have pivotally connected thereto the lower ends of the links ll, the upper ends of which are pivotally connected to the band l.
Fixed to the inner surface of the plate 7 are the ends of the strip l2, said strip being bent so as to provide a vertically disposed channel 13 which has its base spaced from the plate 7 so that the padding M- can be readily engaged therewith, said channel serving to shield the nose of the user.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the shield can be readily swung upwardly when desired, and will remain in its elevated position until it is desired to again shield the face and eyes, thereby obviating the necessity of removing the band 1 from the head.
lVhat is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a head engaging band, a strap having its rear end connected to the band, the forward end of said strap being provided with an offset, said offset terminating in a flange which is connected to the forward part of the band, a shield plate pivot-ally connected with the band, said shield plate having its upper edge provided with a guide normally engaged with the odset, said guide being slidably connected with the strap, a window carried by the shield plate, a channeled member connected to the inner surface of the plate and having a padding connected thereto, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
