MORDECAI BASSAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
MASK-SUPPORTING MEANS.
Application filed May 18, 1923.
To aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MonnEcAI BASSAN, a native of Palestine, having declared my intention of becominga citizen of the United States, and being a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mask- Supporting Means, of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable others conversant with the art to which the invention appertains to utilize the same.
My improvements relate to a combination of a head covering and a feature mask which latter may be concealed within the head covering when not desired for immediate use; and the object of myinvention is to render the mask automatically lockable in position for use, and automatically retractile when released from such position, in such manner that the manipulation and control of the mask is rendered effective by simple means, all as hereinafter fully set forth,the invention consisting in the specific construction and arrangement of parts and appurtenances described and claimed, whereby these results are attained.
In the accompanying drawings I exemplify a practical embodiment of the essential features of my invention, although I do not limit myself to the identical form and construction of parts shown, since modifications in minor details, and equivalent mechanical expedients, may be resorted to with like results, and without departing form the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect.
l/Vith this understanding,
Fig. 1, represents a side view of a head covering or cap provided with my retractile mask, the covering being broken away in part to show the crown frame, etc.; and
Fig. 2, represents a view of the under side of the parts shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, is a top View of the cap, 011 a reduced scale, as shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4:, is a detail View upon an enlarged scale, representing an elevation of one of the mask arms and its pivotal support, the mask arm being broken away in part;
1 ig. 5, is a view of the under side of the parts shown in Fig. &;
Fig. 6, is a sectional elevation taken upon plane of line 6-6, Fig. 4:;
Fig. 7, is a perspective view of one of the spring latches;
Serial No. 639,775.
Fig. 8, is a detail view of one of the mask arm fulcrums;
Fig. 9, is a front view of the cap, with the mask retracted therein. I
In Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 9 of the drawings C, represents a hat, cap, or other suitable or desired form or character of head covering, made in accordance with the design or requirements of use intended. This outer covering G, contains a crown frame F, of relatively stifi structure, consisting of a cranial band 7, and arched ribs f, f, rigidly attached thereto, so as to constitute a sup port for the mask arms a, a, independent of the covering C, which latter may be made in part of flexible or any other material as may be found most expedient.
The frame F, may be made of light weight thin sheet metal, preferably of elastic resilient character, so as to adapt itself readily to the size and shape of the cranium of the wearer; or other elastic resilient material may be used for the purpose, such as celluloid or equivalent material.
The mask arms a, a, are pivotally mounted on opposite sides of the cranial band f, on fulcrums p, p, rigidly attached to the band 7', either directly, or preferably by means of bearing blocks Z), 6, integral with said cranial band f. The mask m, is attached to and between the forward ends of said arms a, a, which are provided with rear extensions a, a, in the form of finger rests (a', a,) which may be utilized in manipulating the arms a, a, and mask m, against the resistance of the retractile spring 8, as for instance in projecting the mask m, to its forward or visual position, as in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, in which position it is held by spring latches Z, Z, which automatically engage the arms a, a, when the latter are sufficiently depressed against the resistance of said retractile spring 8.
The said retractile springs s, encircle the fulcrum studs 9, p, each being secured at one extremity to a bearing block b, and contacting at its other extremity against a mask arm a, as will be understood by reference more particularly to Figs. 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings. 7
The latch springs Z, are secured at their upper ends to the blocks 6, b, and are formed each with a shoulder Z, for contactual engagement with a mask arm a, when the latter is sufficiently depressed as hereinbefore stat-ed, against theresistance of the retractile springs s, s,the lower extensions Z Z of said latch springs Z, Z, affording means whereby said latches Z, Z, may be depressed by finger contact to release the arms a, a, to allow the rctractile springs s, s, to force the arms a, a, back until they rest against stops 6', b, or equivalent motion limiting means, it being understood of course that this retraction of the arms a, a, carries the mask m, through the frontal opening 0, in the head covering C, and out of sight within the latter, as indicated particularly in dotted lines in Fig. 1, of the drawings.
My mask supporting device is adapted to various practical uses. The essential features thereof may be embodied in chauffeurs caps, or other head wear designed for protective purposes; or for amusement purposes, as for masquerading, toy caps, etc. The features of automatically locking the mask in exposed position, and automatic retraction when released therefrom, are distinctive features of my invention and new in the state of the art.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. hiask supporting means of the character designated, comprising a crown band frame, mask supporting arms pivotally mounted on said frame, a mask attached to and between said supporting arms, a spring which tends constantly to retract said arms, and an automatic spring latch for engaging a supporting arm when lowered, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. Mask supporting means of the character designated, comprising a head covering, a crown band frame, mask supporting arms pivotally mounted on said frame, a mask attached to and between said supporting arms, a spring which tends constantly to retract said arms, and an automatic spring latch for engaging a supporting arm when lowered, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
3. Mask supporting means of the character designated, comprising a head covering, a crown band frame, mask supporting arms pivotally mounted on said frame, a mask attached to and between said supporting arms, springs which tend constantly to retract said mask supporting arms, and automatic spring latches which engage said arms when depressed against the resistance of said rctractile springs, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
4:. Mask supporting means of the character designated, comprising a head covering, a crown band frame, mask supporting arms pivotally mounted on said frame, a mask attached to and between said supporting arms, springs which tend constantly to retract said mask supporting arms, and automatic spring latches which engage said arms when depressed against the resistance of said rctractile springs, together with means for limiting the rctractile movement of said arms, substantially in the manner and for the pin-pose set forth.
5. Mask supporting means of the character designated, comprising a head covering, a crown band frame, mask supporting arms pivotally mounted on said frame, and formed with finger bearings, a mask attached to and between said supporting arms, springs which tend constantly to retract said mask supporting arms, and automatic spring latches which engage said arms when depressed against. the resistance of said retractile springs, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
