Description

ROBERT B. FOWZER.
Improvement in Hinges.
Patented Nov- 7, 1871.
3 WVQMGLI w. 69 aw) W1. A z-z M f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT B. FOUZER, OF BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
lMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,580, dated November 7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. FOUZER, of
Butler, in. the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification and showing in perspective my improved automatic-closing hinge.
My invention consists in the application, to gate and door-hinges, of a device for closing the door or gate Whenever it may be opened. This device consists of a leaf-spring, of the ordinary construction, attached to one of the straps of the hinge, and so bent over that its outer end shall come just in front of the other leaf of the hinge, so that when the door is opened the spring acts against and closes it.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and mode of operation.
I take an ordinary strap-hinge, a, and to one of the straps, I), I fasten a bent leafspring, c. The inner end of this spring is fastened to the leaf 1;, and the spring is bent over and backuntil its outer end comes directly in front of the other strap, d, of the hinge. When the gate is opened the spring 0 comes against the strap d, slides along and presses against it until the gate is released, when the pressure causes it to close. The spring 0 need not be separate from the hinge, since the strap 1) may be drawn out and bent over so as to perform the function of the spring. This device is very simple and cheap in its con strnction, and is not liable to break or get out of order.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is-
A spring, a, forming part of or attached to one of the straps of a hinge, and recurved or bent back so as to bear against the other strap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I, the said ROBERT B.
'FOUZER, have hereunto set my hand.
ROBERT B. FOUZER.
