To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it'known that I, HENRY CARLISLE, Jr., ofv the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bracelets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the na- 4ture thereof', sucient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the saine, reference being. had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in whichlllyinvention consists in applying to the joint of Va -bracelet one or more springs, for the purpose of ren-- dering said bracelet self-opening or-self-closing.
vIt further consists in providing a bracelet with an elastic strip, which forms the hinge, and also constitutes a spring for opening or closing the bracelet.
It inally consists in providing a bracelet with an elastic strip, which shalll constitute the hinge and spring, and which is so constructed as to form the catch for holding together'the ends of the bracelet.
In the drawing- A may represent a bracelet, which, in the present case, consists of two parts, B B', made of suitable material, and Aof any desired shape and configuration.
C represents a strip of elastic material, by prefcrence. of metal, which is passed through the bracelet in the direction of its length.
It will be seen that the joint a ot' the parts of the bracelet is thus provided with .a hinge, which holds the parts together and permits the opening and closing of the bracelet.
By previously bending the strip C in the form of a curve it becomes a spring, which, according to the di-l rection of the curvature, will either throw open or close the bracelet.
The same result is produced if either of the spring hinges, shown in figs. 5 and 6, is applied tothe joint. A catch or fastening for the bracelet may be formed in various ways.
In fi g. l I show one end of the strip C bent orturned a-corresponding catch, c, whereby, when the two parts are brought into contact, they will engage with each other, after the manner of a snap, and thus hold the bracelet in a closed state.
The bracelet is readily opened by pressing on the head of the catch c, which operation disengages it from the hook b, and the two portions, B B', will then fly apart, leaving the bracelet open.
1n iig'. '4I show a modification, wherein I secure the fastening devices to the strip G. Ahooked piece, c, is riveted or otherwise attached near one end of said strip, anda piece, d, with a suitable eye or catch, e, is attached near the other end. 1t is evident that the operation of this p art is similar to that already dcscribed.
A presser, f, is secured or formed with the hooked piece e, for releasing the fastening, but its construction and operation is well known and requires no further description.
The ends g g of the strip G (tig. 4) vwill be bent or turned over the ends of the parts B B', and form means lof Yfirmly retaining the elastic strip imposition.
My invention is readily applicable to bracelets of any material, whether gold, vulca-nite, or otherwise, and will be found to be a simple and practical device for the .purpose intended.

IV-hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 1. The application, to the joint of a bracelet, of va spring, substantially| as and for the purpose described.
2. An elastic strip,'applied to a bracelet, and constituting its hinge and spring, substantially as set forth.
3. The strip C, arranged within the bracelet, forming. its joint and hinge, and having its ends constitute the catch or fastening,substantially as and for the purpose described.
4..v The bracelet A B B', in combination with an inclosed strip O, substantially as and for the purpose described.
