CLOSURE FOR CONTAINERS. APPUCATION man NOV. 15. m3.

HENRY A. KEINER AND EMILE PLANQON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO SAID HENRY A. KEINER.
CLOSURE FOR CONTAINERS.
Application filed November 15, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HENRY A. KEINEP. and EMILE PLANgoN, citizens of the United States, and'residents of the city of New York, borough of'Queens, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Clo-- sures for Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to closures for sheet-metal or other containers for liquids, with more particular reference to improvements in the type of containers shown and described in a co-pending application, filed Nov. 10, 1913, Serial No. 800,029, in which we have set forth the most important features that should be possessed by containers of this character.
The principal objects of the present invention include the provision of an improved closure for containers which shall possess to the highest possible degree the necessary or desirable features or qualities set forth in the co-pending application referred to, and which in addition thereto shall be strong and durable, relatively light in weight, simple and inexpensive, and shall preferably be of self-contained construction, thus avoiding multiplicity of separate parts and corresponding interference with rapid handling, convenient packing and-storage and commercial use of the closures.
Our invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper portion of a container provided with a clo sure embodying our invention, a portion of the closure being shown intransverse vertical section taken on the center line there of; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the entire closure and adjacent parts of the container shown in transverse vertical section taken on the center line thereof; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the closure as applied to a container; Fig. 1 is a sectional detail showing a modification of the connection between two parts of the container, as described hereinafter; Fig. 5 is a sectional] detail showing another modification of said con,- nection; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a portion of the container, showing said lastnamed modification; Fig. 7 is a top plan view of a container, showing a third modifi- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
Serial No. 801,133.
cation of the connection between two parts of the container, and Fig. '8 is a sectional detail of said third modification.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, in which similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in the several views,
numeral 11 designates the body portion of a sheet-metal container of the character to which we have reference, the upper portion 12 thereof being dome-shaped or otherwise reduced in diameter as it extends upward, terminating in the neck 13 which is of suitable design and construction to cooperate with the closure 14, as described hereinafter.
The complete closure comprises the cap or stopper member 15, the securing or looking member 16 and the packing or sealing member 17. In our improved container the stopper member and the securing member are connected in such a way that while provision is made for relative movement between them, in the manner described hereinafter, they form in effect a self-contained unit. Thepacking or sealing member 17 is not primarily connected with either of the other members of the complete closure, but is so designed and constructed as to cooperate therewith.
' The cap or stopper member 15 is preferably constructed either of light cast metal or of pressed sheet-metal and is substantially bowl or pan shaped with a flange 18 extending continuously around the outside of said member and adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the neck 13, and with a beaded or turned upper edge 19 which serves to reinforce the said member and maybe employed as part of the connection between the stopper member and'the securing member.
The securing or looking member 16 consists of a'four-armed skeleton or frame, this member as shown preferablyv comprising multiple arms radiating from a common center and disposed at right angles to each other, and either being all constructed of a single piece of metalor being made up of two or more separate pieces suitably connected at or near their common center. Two of these arms,'20 20, which are preferably diametrically opposed to each other, are intended to be employed in the manner described hereinafter for securing the said member to the container, while the other two arms,,2121, are used to connect the said stock or other suitable packing material, the
outer edge thereof being turned upwardly and then outwardly throughout the circumference of the disk, so that the said edge may be interposed between the flange 18 of the stopper member 15 and the upper edge of the neck 13 of the container, and thus when said stopper member is clamped firmly in place a substantially hermetic seal is produced.
The arms 20 20, of the securing member 16 are turned downward at their ends and their extreme outer edges are then turned in to form hooks or jaws thereon, which are adapted to engage lugs 23 either formed as part of the neck of the container or suitably secured thereto. The contact surfaces of the hooks or jaws 22 and the lugs 23 are slightly inclined from the horizontal, so that as the hooks or jaws are introduced under the lugs and advanced thereunder by turning the securing member 16 slightly a wedging eifect is secured by the cooperation of the hooks or aws 22 and the lugs 23 and the stopper member 15 is secured tightly in place and clamps the edge of the sealing member 17 between the flange 18 of the stopper member 15 and the upper edge of the neck 13 of the container. By revolving the locking member 16 slightly in a reverse direction, the pressure of flange 18 upon the edge of disk 17 is gradually reduced until the hooks or jaws 22 pass entirely out of engagement with the lugs 23, when the combined stopper member and securing member maybe removed from the container, leaving the sealing member loosely in place and readily removable.
1n the closure shown in Figs. 1, 2 and and in the three modifications thereof shown in the other figures of the drawings, the securing member 16 is not rigidly secured to the stopper member 15, but is so connected therewith as to permit at least partial revolution of the former relative to the latter. Thus in securing the closure in place by engaging the jaws or hooks 22 of the securing member 16 with the lugs 23 on the neck of the container, the stopper member is not turned with the securing member 16, and hence there is no frictional motion between the stopper member 15 and the disk 17, such as would tend to abrade or cut the said disk, particularly if it were in a moist condition.
The outer ends of the arms 21 21, of the securing member 16 are so shaped and di mensioned as to secure said sealing member loosely to the stopper member 15. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the outer ends of the arms 21 21, are bent downward and then outward, so as to engage the inwardlyturned upper edge 19 of the stopper membeu 15. In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the outer ends of the arms 21 21, are bent to form hooks adapted to engage the outwardly-turned head 24: formed on the upper edge of the stopper member 15. In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the outer ends of the arms 21 are turned downward and then outward and are so shaped and dimensioned as to engage slots 25 formed in the sides of the stopper member 15 immediately below the beaded upper edge thereof, said slots being of such length so as to permit sufiicient rotation of the securing member 16 to engage the hooks or jaws 22 thereof with the lugs 23, and to release them from such engagement, without causing any rotation whatever of stopper member 15 in its seat. In this construction the extreme ends of the arms 21 are upset or otherwise spread after being introduced into the slots 25, so as to prevent disengagement of the arms from the slots. The modification shown in Figs. 7 and 8 difiers from that shown in Figs. 5 and 6 only in that the ends of the arms 21 21, are turned downward to engage slots 26 26, formed in the bottom of the stopper member 15. The constructions shown in the three modifications are adapted to operate in the same manner as that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and they differ therefrom only in details of the connections between the stopper member 15 and the securing member 16.
In Fig. 1., one of the lugs 23 is shown as being provided with securing or locking means 27, adapted to prevent disengagement of the hooks or jaws 22 from the lugs 2-3, such means consisting of the ordinarypadlock orthe like.
Many modifications of minor details of our improved closure for containers will doubtless readily suggest themselves to those skilled in this-art, and we therefore do not desire to limit our invention to the specific construction herein shown and described.
